NEW WINES OF GREECE DELEGATION VISITS SIR PAZ ESTATE IN THE YARRA VALLEY

On Tuesday, 24 June 2015, John Zapris owner of Sir Paz Wines and his son Chris hosted a visit by 24 major producers from the Greek wine industry. The visit was a government initiative and included lectures by Rob Dolan on the way wine is produced in the Yarra Valley, tastings and viticulture discussion over some delicious locally produced food platters.

The event was attended by Yarra Ranges Shire Mayor, Cr Maria McCarthy of Billanook Ward, other council representatives, state government Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources, HACCI and local media.

This visit followed a two day, six themed master class series in Melbourne led by Athens-based educators travelling especially to Australia for the tour, Yiannis Karakasis and Grigoris Michailos of the Wine Commanders.

Australian wine and hospitality industries had the opportunity to dive into the most comprehensive Greek wine master class series ever held in the country, as the largest contingent of Greek winemakers toured Australia from 22-30 June.

Winemaking in the Yarra Valley first started over 150 years ago when Swiss-French migrants brought French varietals like Cabernet, Syrah and Chardonnay. Local wine production was ended in the 1920’s by the economics of the day - changing tastes and the high price of wool. However, it was re-established in the 1970’s by a few pioneering producers that are still operating today.

The region till this day is known as Australia’s leading cool climate wine region and is globally recognised for its high quality, fairly priced wines made from low-yield, estate-owned and grown vineyards.

HELLENIC MUSEUM EXHIBITION - LEMNOS-GALLOPOLI 1915:WOMEN IN WAR

In commemoration of the centenary of the Gallipoli Campaign/Battle of Çanakkale, a transnational collaboration of artists have come together to explore the female perspective of conflict and war through the creation of a series of works based around this historical event and in particular, the lesser known ties that bind Turkey, Australia and Greece through the Greek island of Lemnos.

Utilising archival material as well as original works, the exhibition Lemnos-Gallipoli 1915: Women in War allows the visitor to go on a sensory journey to the time of the campaign - both on the island of Lemnos, as well as on the Gallipoli peninsula. Open till 12 August 2015.

THE GREEKLISH PROJECT

Alo dali mou. It's a phrase so familiar to the thousands of Greek Australians, but not so much in the general Greek or Australian population.

It's 'Greeklish': a beautifully blended combination of Greek and English that has come from years of living in a predominately English speaking nation.

Almost all migrant communities have these special blended phrases, but now, a group of Greek Australians are hoping to document and celebrate the phenomenon.

The Australian Slang Project (TASP) is embarking on a project to eventually create a Greeklish dictionary. TASP founder and SBS Greek radio presenter, Kyriakos Gold, says the group is in the process of establishing an online database, much like the popular Urban Dictionary website, that will allow Greek Australians to contribute their favourite Greeklish words.

Mr Gold says it's time to celebrate Greeklish rather than ridicule it.

Already in the works are two Greeklish events. The Greeklish Bee will be held on July 25 in Melbourne, and is being set up to include live music and trivia contests. The debate, to be hosted later in the year, will welcome prominent Greek Australian academics to discuss Greeklish and our culture's identity.

Tickets go on sale Wednesday 1 July. For more information visit Facebook or visit the website.
