Historical Happenings

An Old-Fashioned Fourth

Saturday, July 4, 2015

On Saturday, July 4 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., celebrate An Old-Fashioned Fourth at the History Museum. Watch for the Museum on Wheels escorted by volunteers in costume at the Redwood City Parade (more information at www.parade.org).  Then, come inside and celebrate as they did in the 1880s. Children are invited to create their own Fourth of July crafts including a Liberty Bell. Then, kids and adults can help make ice cream. To earn a taste, turn the crank on the churn at least 10 times.

At 1 p.m., enjoy summertime films from the archives. In honor of the History Museum’s exhibit Let’s Play Ball, the first film highlights a 1915 baseball game where the “Single Men” of Santa Clara University compete against the “Married Men” of Redwood City. Other films include a polo competition held at Crossways Farm, a Boy Scout group on a camping trip in San Mateo County in the 1930s and highlights from the 1937 County Fair, including a rodeo.  Admission is free for members.
