Meet the Bergmans from sunny Florida. In September of 2012, Herman was researching Retinol creams online and came across the Skin Actives website and their “DIY” products. Joan had been using a 0.2% Retinol product from her Dermatologist and paying $50 per oz.

Herman started making Joan a night cream with 1% Retinyl Acetate concentration and with some refining, came up with the following recipe. This DIY formula has five times more active Retinyl and only costs $11.31 per oz:

After Overwhelming Positive Feedback, We Proudly Announce the Nail Care Duo now available for $12.50

We  are happy to announce that  the Nail Care Duo is now available for sale. This duo had everyone asking why they couldn't find it for sale on our website,  when a bonus gets this kind of feedback, check out what people had to say:

"The serum immediately relieved dry cuticles. Conditioned and moisturized the nail and cuticle almost immediately upon applying. The oil provided an even richer experience and gave a lasting effect, about 24 hrs. I also loved this product on the toe nails and cuticles. Left all cuticles soft and hydrated and nails were visually improved. Loved this product!"

"I purchased due to some creases in my husband's nail, as a result of a fungal infection; so far I've noticed a huge improvement on his nail, as his nail grows out it becomes smoother and more uniform, and no new dents where the nail care duo has been applied."

"Loved it! My skin and nails are so dry and brittle because I'm in health care and wash my hands a lot. Really helps! I'm just bad at remembering to use it but when I do, it's absolutely amazing!! I think if it had an applicator or sponge tip I would be better about  using it."

"After only a week of application I can see significant improvement in my nail health. Both products are easy to apply and leave my skin silky and smooth. Not only do they soak into the skin quickly, but they also provide ongoing moisture until the next application. The subtle perfume also adds to the product."

"I use the Nail Care Duo on my fingernails and my toenails. While I don't have acrylic or gel nails, I do wear nail polish on my toenails. The Nail Care Duo has made a noticeable difference on both my fingers and toes - my cuticles are no longer dry and ragged and my fingernails (without polish) seems smooth and somewhat stronger. I'm really pleased with this product and I hope Skin Actives adds it to it's list of available products!"

"Both products absorb quickly, which I like. I like that they go right in and right to work. My nails seem stronger with less peeling, actually, no peeling, and the cuticles are smooth-no hang nails-yay!"

Don't panic!
A first look at an ingredient list.

The ingredient lists on the labels of skin care products look, at first sight, practically undecipherable. However, it is possible to understand what is in that product if you try hard enough. It's not easy though; it helps if you know some chemistry, but if not, you can still figure it out with some patience ( if all else fails, you can post on our forum and I will help.)

A good start is to try and separate the ingredients into two lists: one of ingredients that make the base cream (or serum) and the second which lists the actives.

For a very basic cold cream you will find just a few components:

Ingredients: Water, Mineral Oil (emollient, skin conditioner,) Wax (thickener,) fragrance.

For a commercial product the list gets longer because formulators use a variety of ingredients to improve the feel, texture, stability and color.

Dear Hannah,

I'm looking into mixing my own products, but I've never done it before. Do you have any tips and tricks for beginners?

Here is some really great advice from our Forum User Panda:

I am going to give you my version and hopefully others will chime in. My best answer is sometimes it's hard and sometimes it's easy. Sometimes it works well and sometimes it doesn't.

Start with a base that you like. That is the important part. Then mix small batches from there. As you prepare to add each active do a search on the forum and see what issues others have faced when trying to incorporate this active - like does it need to be mixed with water or heated. Add your actives one at a time and try the mix out for a few days before you add more. Some find that alpha lipoic acid stings, some don't. If it stings too much you may need to reduce the concentrationby adding more basemix. Some actives require a day or two to fully dissolve (licorice.)

Some actives can make the base cream thin (DMAE), some can make it gritty (betulinic acid), some can make it too thick (hylauronic acid), and some can give it a color that will stain your skin (grapeseed). See why it is so hard to answer this question! But if you start slow and make small batches you can recover from most anything and end up with a beautiful result. I hope this helps!
