CLIMATE CHANGE & AIR QUALITY

The new series of discussions and papers examines how market forces can efficiently allocate energy resources to reduce carbon emissions in China. At the four dialogues held in June, Chinese and US experts explored environmental and energy issues through the prism of economic transformation. The first paper of the series, by Anders Hove and Merisha Enoe, sets the scene for more detailed reports on topics ranging from power sector reform to carbon emissions trading systems.

Cross-Border Investment

The latest case study in the Paulson Papers on Investment series explores the story of BYD Auto, the one-time battery maker now seeking to carve out a niche in electric vehicles. The case study traces the Shenzhen-based company’s journey to the US and its ensuing challenges. Facing a difficult market for electric cars, the company turned to buses instead. BYD’s story offers a cautionary tale about the pitfalls and complexities that confront ambitious Chinese investors in the United States.

CONSERVATION

The new network, launched in partnership with China's State Forestry Administration, creates a platform for 11 coastal provinces to share best practices and coordinate efforts to improve the effectiveness of wetlands conservation management. China's coastal wetlands, whose area has shrunk by 22% in the last decade, provide crucial ecosystem services and are considered the first line of defense against rising sea level caused by climate change.

SUSTAINABLE CITIES

The Paulson Institute invited a delegation from Portland, Oregon, to visit Beijing's Pinggu District and share insights about environmental protection and urban planning. Pinggu Communist Party Secretary Zhang Jifu participated in the Institute's Mayors Training Initiative in 2013, and after returning from the US decided to incorporate sustainability into the district's economic strategy. The Institute has been helping with the plans.
