Community based groups receive $10,000 to improve health in Central and West Long Beach

 Building Healthy Communities: Long Beach is happy to announce the recipients of the 2015 mini-grant awards to host innovative programming designed to improve community health in West and Central Long Beach. Awarded to informal community groups and non-profit organizations, the BHC Long Beach mini-grants have distributed $46,632 to forty-five projects in West and Central Long Beach over the last four years.
BHC Long Beach mini-grants are awarded each year to provide opportunities for learning and development, support creative projects that enhance the collaborative work of BHC Long Beach, support community engagement, and help address the issues outlined in the BHC Long Beach Community Action Plan, which outlines key health disparities in West and Central Long Beach.
This year’s funded community projects include:
- Filipino Migrant Center: A community profile report on “Filipinos in Westside Long Beach”
- Long Beach Cycology: Bicycle safety and maintenance workshops
- Operation Jump Start: College start program with youth in the Martin Luther King Park neighborhood
- Long Beach BLAST: Free legal clinic at Reid High School and a campus tour of CSULB for Reid students and families
- Green Education, Inc: “Green Prize Festival” at Cesar Chavez Park
- United Parents of Roosevelt Elementary: “Say NO to Bullying/Has la Diferencia: Si NO al Bullying” workshops for parents and students
- Justice for My Sister: “Retomemos la Noche/Take Back the Night” event
- Teatro Jornalero Sin Fronteras/Cornerstone Theater Company: Theatro, transformando la comunidad Latina! Project
- Semillas de Esperanza: “West Long Beach por una Mente y Cuerpo Saludable”
- Anakbayan Long Beach: “Westside Stories: Through the Eyes of Filipino Youth” Community Documentation Project
- Long Beach School of Yoga: “Yoga and Ayurveda Education for Long Beach Youth”

Stay connected to the People’s State of the City

 At this year’s People’s State of the City, over 450 community members gathered at Stephens Middle School to hear from Long Beach residents about the current issues facing our communities. Organized by Long Beach Rising, the event featured a community resource fair, musical performances, and a theatre skit on “A Day in the Life of a Hotel Worker.” Near the end of the event, attendees were encouraged to take action with the campaigns working to make Long Beach a more equitable city for all. Every Student Matters youth demand accountability at school board meeting

 On June 2nd, youth leaders of the Every Student Matters campaign attended the Long Beach Unified School District's school board meeting to express their concerns about meaningful engagement and accountability regarding the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). LBUSD plans to spend more than $2 million on school police and security, while only setting aside $100,000 for support programs that address students’ emotional and social well being like Restorative Justice and Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies. The Building Healthy Communities Summer Gathering is an interactive, outdoor art exhibit and neighborhood festival to connect residents to social justice campaigns for a more equitable Long Beach.
