Holy Innocents, San Francisco - A Place Where All Are Welcome

E-Newsletter, July 11, 2015
1For those with birthdays this week:
18th July ~ Alfred Escoffier
19th July ~ Joan Curry
22nd July ~ David Johnston
24th July ~ Christina Kane &
                                    Cary McCullough
26th July ~ Natalie Walrond
30th July ~ Camilla Bixler
31st July ~ Sam Dixon

Watch over your children, O God, as their days increase. Bless them and guide them wherever they may be. Strengthen them where they stand. Comfort them when discouraged or lonely. Raise them up when they fall, and in their hearts, may your peace that passes all understanding, abide with them for ever.  In the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

And a prayer for all who travel:
O God, in all, whose glory fills the whole creation, and whose presence we find wherever we go: Preserve those who travel [in particular _______________]; surround them with your loving care; protect them from every danger; and bring them in safety to their journey's end; through
Jesus Christ our Savior.
Amen.

Stephen Ministry a model of pastoral care for a congregation
http://www.stephenministries.org/

At last Wednesday's Potluck a number of you expressed interested in developing a Stephen Ministry at Holy Innocents.
As they say on their website:

Stephen Ministry is the one-to-one lay caring ministry...Stephen Ministry congregations equip and empower lay caregivers—called Stephen Ministers—to provide high-quality, confidential, Christ-centered care to people who are hurting.
Let's continue considering this.  If we determine this is what we want to do, we shall move forward with this.  Let me (Vicar Jane) know if you are interested in participating.  There is a Leadership Training in Anaheim scheduled for the first week of February that I would go to if a couple of you will join me.

HOLY INNOCENTS ON IONA IN 2016!

We are organizing a pilgrimage for the Holy Innocents community to the holy island of Iona, Scotland. Iona is what the Celts call a “Thin Place,” where the boundary between the natural and the sacred is thinned, where one more readily senses the supernatural realm. Jane McDougle has experienced it. So has Dave Olson, and these two will lead the pilgrimage. We will add 2 days to explore Dublin, Ireland, where one can see “the most beautiful book in the world,” The Book of Kells, a 9th century collection of the four Gospels hand copied and decorated in the Abbey on Iona (according to best determination). Dates are May 27 to June 3, 2016. Contact Jane or Dave (dave.olson55@gmail.com) for more information.

To let the larger community of Holy Innocents share in this experience, we plan to gather in a follow-up retreat locally after the pilgrimage, open to all, to share the blessings of Iona.

E-LETTER & VICARLY VACATION
As much as I love hanging out at Holy Innocents, I will be away for the next two and half weeks.   The E-letter will therefore also be resting, returning during the first week of August.
For information, or in pastoral emergencies, please contact our Deacon, the Rev. Marcus Crim (415-632-0691), or leave a message on the office number, 415-824-5142, where volunteer Marguerite Tafoya will pick it up.
Wishing everyone a pleasing couple of weeks!  The Rev. Dr. Lois Williams will be with you, Sunday July 19, and the Rev. Cameron Ayers on Sunday, July 26. And of course our Deacon, the Rev.Marcus Crim and Student Deacon, Alberta Buller.
                                                          In love, Jane+

An Introduction to the Episcopal Church

New to Holy Innocents?  New to the Episcopal Church? Or maybe just in search of a refresher course?

Join us for a newly starting Enquirers’ Class for the first four Sundays of August, after the 10am service.   Each class will stand on its own, so no problem if you can’t make them all.  We'll be using the book, "Your Faith, your Life: An Invitation to the Episcopal Church" by Jennifer Gambler with Bill Lewellis, (Morehouse Publishing: 2009).
(SEE EQUIPPING BELOVED COMMUNITY INFO AUG 29)

Contact me, Vicar Jane, at jane@holyinsf.org , or call me at 650 823 2164 if you're interested.

SF Night Ministry – Crisis Line Counseling Opportunity

Night Ministry Crisis Line Counselors (CLCs) offer compassionate, non-judgmental support to callers struggling with loneliness, depression, anxiety, worry, grief and other concerns. During hours when most social service organizations are closed, our night-time Crisis Counseling Line receives 18-20 calls per night, each of which can last anywhere from 5 to 50 minutes. Many of our callers face mental and physical health concerns, financial worries and social isolation, and they turn to us for counseling, conversation and referral services.
The San Francisco Night Ministry is seeking volunteer Crisis Line Counselors (CLCs).  No specific prior training is required, nor is any particular religious background required.  The only requirements are to be at least 18 and to have a compassionate heart and a desire to serve others.
Training (3 evenings or weekend afternoons) will be provided.  The next two training classes are scheduled for:
            Sundays -- July 12, 19, and 26, 2015 -- 2 to 4 p.m., and
Tuesdays -- Sept. 8, 15, and 22 -- 6 to 8 p.m.
Email sfnightministry.org with questions or to register for one of these sets of three classes.

~ if you're interested - talk to Marcus Crim or Marguerite Tafoya ~ they both are trained and experienced in SF Night MInistry
