Never Forget You Are Part of the Hole, oil on canvas, 2015 (52 x 36 inches), Catherine Haley Epstein

Exhibition

On Forgetting | Filling the Flask
A solo show of new work at Pushdot (August 7 - September 25, 2015)

The installation will include painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and scent that address focus and kindness in forgetting. Yes, all that varied material to inspire focus. You will recognize patterns in the work and walk away with something that speaks specifically to you. The work has been two years in the making, and I would love to see you there!

Artist Reception: August 7, 2015, 6-8 PM
Pushdot Studio
2505 SE 11th Ave, Suite 104 (The Ford Building), Portland, OR

Continuing my exploration of Psyche’s mythical journey to reunite with Eros, in “On Forgetting | Filling the Flask” I address the third of her four required tasks. Previously I have explored “Sorting the Seeds” in which she learns to set priorities, and “Learning to Say No” where she understands the need to be true to herself.

Here, she must fill a flask from a dangerous, rushing waterfall. Zeus, in the form of an eagle, comes to the rescue and fills it for her. In doing so, Zeus represents the leader who resolves the situation by being direct, forgetting the minutiae and keeping an eye on the prize. Said another way, it is this focus on what matters -- and forgetting what doesn't -- that enables us to recognize critical patterns and clues that are at first hidden in plain sight.

Updates

National Endowment for the Arts

It was an honor to be nominated this Summer, and to serve on the National Endowments for the Arts Visual Arts Review Panel. I have learned a great deal about the grant process on this level, and sharing this knowledge with artists and organizations that I work with in the future. I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity.

Picture Sentence

My review of Ann Hamilton's exhibit at the Henry Art Gallery in Seattle is featured in the Picture Sentence, Summer 2015 issue. Picture Sentence is a new quarterly contemporary journal encouraging dialogue in the arts, with a focus on activities and projects in the Pacific Northwest. I believe the issue is available at Reading Frenzy in Portland, as well as online.

Mindmarrow | Art is a Verb

I continue to write essays on art and the creative process, albeit at a slower pace as I prepare for my show at Pushdot. Some recent popular essays:

Repository 177: Processed Art is to Canned Spinach as Real Art is to Spinach from the Garden

Repository 166: Where Art Falls Down | The Not-So-Genius MacArthur Genius

Repository 167: Fragrance Wunderkammer | Learning from Master Mandy Aftel

Repository 164: Modeling Your Creative Process After a Banana Slug in 2015

On Coloring | Contemporary Art History

While the coloring craze has become mainstream as a way to sooth the stressed, I continue to sell my coloring book word of mouth, and to the brave. Soon I will have the time and the resources to share some of the beautiful works I have received from "colorers" in an online forum. This year I will also plan another exhibition to raise awareness for the project and for arts in schools. Please contact me if you are interested in participating in this collaboration, likely in Portland again at a new location.
