Two seasons in twelve hours?
At the Monte Carlo Polo Club a new field was inaugurated just in time to celebrate their 3rd tournament. It was also the occasion to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the coming to the throne of Prince Albert of Monaco, the Patron of the club. Another European club, Gstaad celebrates its’ 20th year too this year. Time changes and life moves on as the players at the Monte Carlo tournament illustrated last weekend. The lawyer Pablo Guiñazú was celebrating his 20th year in European polo and as he finished explaining this fact to his astonished audience, a young professional was asked how long he had been playing over here too. He had arrived for the first time in Europe only a few hours before from Buenos Aires. The effects of this added to the seasonal changes of arriving in mid-summer after having left in mid-winter were not conducive to bring out the best in him, but the 2nd day saw the player in better form. Once into the second chukker, it was evident to all that it was not for nothing that he had been chosen by Ruso Heguy to join his select group. Almost as soon as he had really got into his stride a pony put his head at speed into the young Juan Nagore’s hip with the result that he was forced to retire for the rest of the match, only able to limp along supported by the friendly arm of an ambulance men.
The following day he was back in the final but was a shadow of the flashes of brilliance he had momentarily displayed the day before. Polo for Europe wishes him all the best in his future career but the question does arise as  to whether minds and bodies, even in modern times can really adapt fully to changes that take half a year in a matter of hours
