Dear Neighbors,

I hope everyone had a great July 4 weekend.  I wanted to report on a few traffic and transit issues that might impact people or be of interest.

Prospect Street:

Prospect Street will be closed to all traffic – including bicycles and pedestrians – between Sachem Street and Edwards Street beginning at 7:00 a.m. today, and will remain closed to all vehicular traffic through 4:00 p.m. on Sunday (July 12).

Pedestrians and bicyclists will reportedly have access to this portion of Prospect Street before 7:00 a.m. and after 4:00 p.m. each day.  All vehicular traffic will be detoured onto Whitney Avenue during this road closure, although affected residents will be allowed access to their homes.

The planned street closure is to allow construction personnel to erect a crane which will then be moved onto Yale property.

Ferry Street Bridge:

The Ferry Street Bridge will be closed from July 20 to July 26 for electrical upgrades.

Public Hearing on the State Street Train Station (July 22):

The CT Department of Transportation (DOT) has been discussing the New Haven/Hartford/Springfield Rail Program, starting with the renovation of existing stations.  As part of this conversation, the DOT will conduct a public information meeting regarding improvements to be made at the State Street Station on Wednesday, July 22 at 6:00 p.m. in the Program Room of the New Haven Free Public Library (133 Elm Street).

GoNewHavenGo:

I wanted to forward a report from State Representative Roland Lemar about a new New Haven program to help ease traffic congestion, decrease the city’s carbon footprint, and provide opportunities for individuals to save money.

“GoNewHavenGo, is a new organization working to promote responsible commuting and alternative transit use. Starting in September, GoNewHavenGo will be sponsoring events and contests around the city to encourage commuters to "think outside the car." There are several different tax benefits available for both employers and employees who use public transportation or bike to work. You can also earn points redeemable at local restaurants and businesses by signing up for the ridesharing service, Nuride.  To learn more about GoNewHavenGo and how you can save money and get healthier by participating, visit www.gonhgo.org.
