The Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins with a Single Step
|
|
On the 1st of July the nation celebrated Canada Day; a day which m arks a time of reflection and celebration for all that makes Canada the great nation that it is.
As we reflect on where we are as a nation, it is important to note that development is a process, a process which involves, individuals, organizations and communities. Within the City of Kawartha Lakes, the Food Coalition is made up of organizations and individual volunteers, all of whom are nation builders, as they work to "ensure a just and sustainable food system, rooted in healthy communities, in which no one is hungry and everyone has access to healthy, nutritious food."
We invite you to join us, as we build a nation one step at a time.
Step With Us!

Community Care’s Meals on Wheels service provides nutritious hot and frozen meals to those who are experiencing difficulty with cooking. The program ensures that clients’ nutritional needs are met while also providing social interaction from the volunteers who make the deliveries. In the fall of 2014 Community Care expanded the program and began to offer afternoon hot meal deliveries in addition to the traditional lunch time service. The hot afternoon deliveries are now available to residents experiencing difficulty with meal preparation in Bethany, Janetville, Lindsay, Omemee and Downeyville on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Kawartha Lakes Farm Stewardship Fund Launched
|
|
The Kawartha Lakes Farm Stewardship Fund supports landowners who want to implement best management practices for minimizing nutrient and sediment input into waterbodies within the City of Kawartha Lakes. Funding is available to support projects demonstrating a benefit to watershed health, including those addressing nutrient and soil loss, cropland and shoreline erosion, manure storage runoff, livestock access to watercourses, sediments and contaminants entering the water, farm well management, and others projects that address water health.
To be eligible, City of Kawartha Lakes landowners with a registered Farm Business Number, Environmental Farm Plan, or other demonstrated agricultural practice simply need to detail their proposed project and its relation to watershed stewardship. Due to this funding’s emphasis on Lake Simcoe, priority is given to projects within the Talbot River subwatershed, however projects with significant stewardship potential in other CKL locations will be considered. There may also be opportunities to combine the Kawartha Lakes Farm Stewardship Fund with other funding available in this region. Two workshops are being held in conjunction with the Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association. For more information contact Becky Parker, Stewardship Technician, (705) 328-2271 ext. 223 bparker@kawarthaconservation.com.

What an exciting time for local food in our communities! No one can say there isn't much going on in terms of local food in our community.
The Coalition's working groups have been continuing to meet including the Food Security and Sustainability Working Groups. We have had local workshops on making jams and preparing and preserving food. The working groups have also produced documents and maps of all the community kitchens and community gardens in our area, as local food and education resources. A project is now underway to measure the impact of local community gardens. This research will be novel and important as no such studies have been conducted in Ontario to date. Our Food Coalition is cutting edge! Speaking of community gardens, I also had the chance to tour Lindsay Community Garden at Fleming College recently and was thrilled to see all the great plots and diverse produce. Check it out if you can! Our Lindsay community garden is a great spot to plant, relax and socialize.
Another good sign is that our Food Coalition continues to engage local residents through social media. The Coalition's Facebook page continues to expand and is an excellent resources for the general public in terms of local food and related events.
On a more serious note, our valued colleague Julian Douglas, is moving on as her contract with the City expires this month. Julian has been a great asset to the Food Coalition. As a volunteer run initiative, our work would simply not be where it is at without Julian's professional and dedicated support. We will certainly miss Julian and wish her all the best in her future endeavours. The issue of continued professional support for our Coalition will be on the agenda when we meet as a whole this fall.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the main Food Coalition in September. A notice and agenda will follow…
Until then, keep eating local!
