 â€œDIGITAL KILLED THE PHOTOGRAPHER”
            a generational study

The digital war is over but who exactly won?  We are facing a whole new world where we are continually challenged with an ever changing market, new ideas and beliefs, and we now even live in a cloud… but how is that any different than before? Well, it happened 15 minutes ago and was so yesterday.  This program is a light but serious discussion on how to understand the challenges the digital world has brought us and coming face to face with today’s consumer.  We will look at the clash of the culture of yesterday and today, the accessibility and connectivity of the digital world and how this affects the photographic world.  Understanding your market can assist you in dealing with the market.

CREATIVE QUARTERLY

The second Creative Quarterly Winner was Gigi O'Dea.  The theme was "Squint Your Eyes, and Look Closer".  Congratulations Gigi!!

The next Creative Quarterly competition will be in September. The theme is:  "You can turn off the sun, but I'm still going to shine."   For all the 2015 themes and winners, click here.

...From Your President
                            Donna Williams, Turner Photography
Hello Everyone!

All companies, big and small, should have a vision statement.  And like any profitable business, a photography business requires unique intent, defined objectives and specific targets.  You should have a vision statement and a business plan to map out the construction of your business.  It will go a long way to achieving your goals.

Crafting a vision statement may sound like a corporate exercise, but the thinking that goes into those six or seven sentences is some of the most important things you will do for your company.  While we know we need more clients, better clients, or both, we may not be aware of what differentiates us from the pack.  That is what a vision statement defines.  To create your statement, you need to mull over why people should buy my products and services.  You need to ask yourself what you want to create in your business.  And last, but not least, you need to ask yourself, what do I believe people can gain from my hard work as a photographer?

In nailing down the type of work and clients you want as well as the influential relationships you would like to cultivate, you become clearer about the work you should do.  You will also be able to recognize the work you should not do because it does not fit into your ultimate vision.  Also important, a vision statement gives your business a greater purpose than simply capturing still moments with a camera.  Professionals are in it to win, not simply play with a camera.  Don’t trust your business as if you are happy to wake up and take pictures.

If you have been to a networking event for a group of photographers, you know we all sound the same.  Often the only differentiator is a person’s name, specialty and geographic location.  And that’s a problem.  With the growing amount of photographers entering an already crowded market, having a clear vision—one that sets you apart from the rest—is more important than ever.

A vision statement is almost never perfect on the first try.  It’s the one thing an entrepreneur returns to time and time again.  And that’s the beauty of it.  As your business changes and as you learn and grow, your studio’s vision statement can be adjusted to reflect that new dream.

Finally, hard work on a vision statement not only helps you define your goals, it makes it easy to share those objectives with others in a brief manner.  When others understand exactly where you are headed, they can contribute meaningful advice that may propel your business to even greater success!

I look forward to seeing all of you at the next meeting.  Don’t forget to wear your name badge.

Thank you,
Donna Williams

Salon
Jennifer Gerardi
I want to thank everyone who participated in last month's Salon and offer a hearty congratulations to the Best In Show winner Heidemarie Burke! Our first places winners were Heidemarie Burke, Billy D, Gigi O'Dea & Jennifer Gerardi, congrats to all.

I hope all who watched learned a few things & enjoyed listening to our judges.  It was our first fully digital salon where the scoring was done & uploaded LIVE so its only going to be smoother & better from here on out.  I also want to thank Donna Williams for reading the titles, Carmen Schettino for subbing as one of our judges & Maria Lyle who helped me last minute with the scoring! It's so nice that we have people in our guild who care and are willing to pitch in when needed.

That's what makes our guild so awesome!

Please don't forget about print of the month.
