El Niño and the monsoons have arrived, <<First Name>>! 

Finally we are getting a proper monsoon season! Predictions say we will continue to have a cooler and wetter summer, followed by a cold winter with plenty of snow. Here's hoping!

NM EPSCoR JOINS DataONE
DataONE welcomes the NM EPSCoR as the 28th Member Node to join the federation. The development of a Tier 4 Member Node at EPSCoR enhances the partnership by providing another replication target for other Member Nodes in the federation and increasing visibility of NM EPSCoR’s holdings to a broader audience. STEMAP 2015 IS UNDERWAY
Our STEM Advancement Program (STEMAP) welcomes 15 students to the NM EPSCoR community this week at New Mexico Tech. These students will be working through the summer on research at the main campuses of New Mexico State University, New Mexico Tech, and University of New Mexico. Read more...
2015 TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE
Twenty-two elementary and middle school teachers representing three school districts gathered at the Farmington Museum for a five-day workshop to learn about energy and connections to literacy and assessment. The course was based on WestEd’s Making Sense of Science Energy course with some additional material about New Mexico’s energy resources. Read more...
WC-WAVE INTERDISCIPLINARY SUMMER COURSE
In early June, Laurel Saito of the University of Nevada, Reno spearheaded the WC-WAVE Interdisciplinary Modeling Course in Boise, Idaho. Boise State has a full report of the course up on their website—we have an excerpt from that report, written by Kathleen Tuck. Read more...

DOE launching renewable energy pilot: On July 8, the Department of Energy announced the competitive selection of five National Laboratories to lead the $20 million Small Business Vouchers Pilot, a public-private partnership that will connect clean energy innovators across the country with the top-notch scientists, engineers, and world-class facilities at our national laboratories, including Oak Ridge National Laboratory ($5.6 million), National Renewable Energy Laboratory ($4.9 million), Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory ($4.2 million), Sandia National Laboratories ($2.8 million), and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory ($2.7 million). "Teachers with GUTS" funded: Irene Lee of the Santa Fe Institute and Project GUTS recently informed us that the National Science Foundation has funded her project "Teachers with GUTS". Many thanks to NM EPSCoR funded an Innovation Working Group called "Developing an Online Network for Teacher Professional Development in Computational Science/Modeling and Simulation" in Feb 2012.  The findings from that workshop were instrumental to the design of the Teachers with GUTS project and proposal. Adult Night debuted at Explora in November 2004, and has grown into an evening popular with college students, young professionals, parents and grandparents on their night off from the kids, meet-up and singles groups, folks on date night, active retirement groups, and more. More info...

LECTURE: Unconscious Bias

Dr. Jennifer Raymond, Associate Professor of Neurobiology and Associate Dean of the Office of Diversity and Leadership at Stanford University's School of Medicine, will discuss the neuroscience underlying unconscious bias, how and why such biases are formed, how they affect your behavior and what can you can do to counter them. STEMAP 2015 Research Conference

The summer program concludes with the STEMAP Student Research Conference on July 30 at which the students present their results of their summer research with New Mexico EPSCoR researchers. This is a closed event with limited space. Contact Chelsea Chee for more information about this event.

Call for Proposals: Three NM ISE Net Grants

NM ISE Net members and others are invited to apply for three different grant opportunities in Years 3, 4, or 5. Grant funds will be released on a reimbursable basis. Apply for three different grants: Communicating NM EPSCoR Research to a Public Audience Tier 1 (Mini Grants), Communicating NM EPSCoR Research to a Public Audience Tier 2 (Exhibit grants), and Collaborating & Communicating with NM EPSCoR Researchers.
