ContinuumFP eNewsletter July, 2015
- a 3-minute read (aside from reading article links)

Welcome to the 2016 Financial Year!

A new financial year: time to consider a new start?

Will your year be one of financial austerity: or will it be one in which you will realise some long-held dreams?

Our focus for this newsletter is on the long-term: but like all journeys, even the long-term starts with – and is moulded by – the actions we take now! In considering what your long-term financial needs might be, the pathway to achieving them can be potholed: and occasionally make detours.

As financial planners, our role is to help our clients make plans that give them a way to cope with such diversions. Planning strategically means that although those potholes might arise (perhaps in the form of interruptions to income flows; accident or illness – of self, or of a loved one/ dependant; or at a more general level, economic circumstances), or detours might occur (such as – loss of job; becoming permanently disabled; loss of reasoning capacity; etc) – the journey can be continued if adequate preparation has been made.

Exercising financial austerity (not necessarily being ‘mean’) and taking sensible steps to protect the assets that form part of your financial future, mean that you can achieve financial goals in spite of the occasional distraction by events such as those above.

Some of the things you might consider in this context at this time of year include –
  • Allocating your tax refund to the appropriate savings vehicle (speak to your accountant or financial planner about what gave rise to the refund: particularly if debt was involved and a loan could be paid down);
  • Ensuring that your superannuation contributions for the 2015/16 financial year are optimised to support your circumstances;
  • Investing in future financial security (through savings-type dollar cost averaging; salary packaging as appropriate; being tax-wise);
  • Insuring key assets (such as your income; your debt; your needs in trauma situations; and your family’s future; etc); and
  • Protecting assets (through appropriate business/ investment structures – and Estate Planning).
Our website Library article collection includes a number of posts that offer guidance and information about elements of the strategies detailed above: some of them of particular relevance are as follow –
In this article we give you some ideas as to how to ensure that your tax refund is used prudently, including paying down some relevant debt – or starting an investment plan: have a read and share your thoughts…
There are some unnerving statistics around as to the level of underinsurance in Australia; and while the problem is slowly being addressed, if your underinsurance persists when a potential claim event occurs it is your
future (and that of your family) that is put at risk. If you have an experience with an insurance claim you would like to share, feel free to comment on the article…
There are prudent times to increase your savings into superannuation – and these occasions vary according to individual situations: read about the eligibility to contribute; and seek advice as to what is your best strategy on this front at this stage of your journey…

Our final article deals with Estate Planning -
Having a Will is part of the solution, but unless it was drafted in the context of protecting the assets you will have available for the benefit of your family/ loved ones – and their entitlement to those assets, this document alone may not be adequate!

In closing out this month's eNews, just a couple of alerts as to coming events/ topics:
  • we are starting a refresh of our website - you are invited to let us know any changes you would welcome (check our current site at www.continuumfp.com.au)
  • our next eNews will include some information around the decision-making when the need to move - yourself or relatives - into a Retirement Village or Aged Care facility (you are invited to share experiences you have in this area that we could include in our commentary - anonymously if you prefer) - and
  • spare a thought for all of the participants in the Kokoda Challenge in the Gold Coast Hinterland this weekend (18 and 19 July)!
...and a Big Thank You to our clients/ referral partners for referrals made in just the past couple of weeks: we really do appreciate the confidence you show in us in this way: and yes, we are still accepting new clients.

Best wishes for a great start to the new financial year and as always, please feel at liberty to share this newsletter with family or friends who you think might benefit from the tips and information we deliver in this way.
