Partnership Council highlights progress and priorities

The Oxford Academic Health Science Network’s second annual meeting provided an opportunity to hear about some of the major achievements from partnership working across our region in 2014/15. Discussions during the main session on 17 June picked out some of the highlights from our Annual Review – with the conversations continuing outside in our information zone where delegates could meet the leads of our programmes, themes and clinical networks. Oxford AHSN Chief Executive Prof Gary Ford said the AHSN's work was about improving patient outcomes, experience and safety by finding better ways to do things. Read more >
  • UPDATE: A new report of our activities in April-June is out today.

Our showcase highlights clinical innovation

Tracey Marriott, left, on the Technology Showcase expert panel
The Oxford AHSN teamed up with Isis Innovation to host a technology showcase. The 30 June event demonstrated the breadth and depth of smart ideas and challenges coming to fruition – with a particular focus on e-health and big data. Contributors included:
  • Oxford AHSN directors Nick Scott-Ram (Wealth Creation) and Tracey Marriott (Clinical Innovation Adoption)
  • Oxford AHSN partners – amongst them Bucks cardiologist Piers Clifford, space-to-health pioneer Geraint Morgan (Open University) and Oxford Brookes University Vice Chancellor Alistair Fitt
  • Oxford Academic Health Science Centre theme leads Martin Landray and Kazem Rahimi
  • Oxford University Hospitals’ Chair Dame Fiona Caldicott on her role as national data guardian for health and social care
Tracey Marriott was part of an expert panel discussion chaired by Prof Lionel Tarassenko (see above) and there was a spotlight on how the Oxford AHSN has accelerated the adoption of the device he developed to help women who develop diabetes during pregnancy - it affects 6,000 pregnancies each year in our region.

Patient safety update: Q initiative

Seven key figures from our region are among the founders of the national Q initiative. Q will make it easier for people from all parts of the health care system with expertise in improvement to share ideas, enhance their skills and make changes that bring tangible benefits for patients. The founding cohort includes:
  • Jill Bailey, Head of patient safety, Oxford AHSN
  • Julie Connell, nurse, Oxford Health
  • Ian Holt, nurse, Oxford Brookes
  • Marion Lynch, Deputy Medical Director, NHS England South
  • Pepe Mullerat, surgeon, Bucks Hospitals
  • Emma Vaux, consultant nephrologist, Royal Berks
  • Roz Young, nurse, Bedford Hospital

Come and meet us at Venturefest Oxford

We will be in the entrance lobby of the Said Business School throughout Venturefest this Wednesday (8 July). Come and have a chat – and pick up a copy of our Annual Review. Oxford AHSN Director of Commercial Development Dr Nick Scott-Ram is leading an expert panel session on the evolution of a life sciences company into ‘adulthood’ (3pm).

…We’re staying on at the Said Business School for our first international summit

Key alumni of universities in the Oxford AHSN region now working abroad are returning to attend the first Oxford AHSN Alumni Summit on Thursday and Friday (9/10 July). They will join UK leaders in life sciences drawn from industry, academia and government to create new opportunities for collaboration and progress in tackling 21st century healthcare challenges. The Minister for Life Sciences, George Freeman, will be a special guest at the conference.

Prof Sir John Bell, Regius Professor of Medicine at the University of Oxford,
said: “Interactions between the academic and healthcare communities here are really powerful. We have the capability to really make progress in precision medicine. We are hoping to bring our alumni back to create opportunities for collaboration and interactions and demonstrate the progress we have made."

Nominations open for our partnership award

The Oxford AHSN is working with OBN for a second year in sponsoring the OBN AHSN Award for the best public-private collaboration. We are looking for nominations from across the NHS, universities and industry demonstrating effective joint working. The work should ideally have started during 2014/15. The first winner of this award in 2014 was the collaboration between the University of Cranfield and Bedford Hospital on a diagnostic tool to measure bone density in the community.

Nominations should be submitted to megan.turmezei@oxfordahsn.org by Monday 3 August. Please include key contacts together with a brief outline of the collaboration and outcomes achieved so far. A shortlist will be drawn up and the winners announced and presented at the OBN annual awards dinner on 1 October.

Using innovations to keep well and out of hospital

The Oxford AHSN has submitted a joint expression of interest with Wessex AHSN to the NHS England test bed programme. Our focus is on keeping people well and out of hospital using digital, diagnostics and precision medicine innovation, improving patient outcomes, experience and safety in four areas:
  • People with and at risk of long-term conditions including use of psychological therapies
  • Reducing childhood hospital admissions
  • Reducing hospital admissions in people with respiratory disease
  • Improving quality of life, reducing mortality and disability following stroke.
The final bidding process is expected to take place towards the end of the year.
The Oxford AHSN Imaging Clinical Network has made a video to help patients prepare for a PET-CT scan. It follows a similar one for patients about to have an MRI scan which has been seen by over 1500 people.

How are we doing?

A wide cross-section of our stakeholders will be contacted this month to answer questions about their relationship with the Oxford AHSN. This feedback will help us improve how we work with you. Look out for an email from YouGov who are carrying out the independent survey with all AHSNs on behalf of NHS England.
