1000s of Glasgow families to face cuts

Analysis carried out by the Scottish Parliament Information Centre has revealed that thousands of Glasgow families will be affected by tax credit cuts including 46,000 children following the introduction of the Welfare Reform and Work Bill. More... 

New Scottish Government Director for Children and Families

Olivia McLeod has now taken up post as Director for Children and Families. She brings a wealth of experience from her work in children's policy in Whitehall, and previously as Deputy Director in Scotland. Kids going hungry through the holidays

Benefit cuts are creating a higher demand for projects that ensure children get a hot meal this summer as parents go without food to try to ensure their children have enough to eat.  Read more...

Glasgow Islamic nursery opens

A new Islamic nursery has opened in Glasgow's south side.  Little Wonders, said to be Scotland's first Islamic nursery will provide 28 places where children will be educated with an Islamic ethos.    More...

Asylum seekers facing further financial hardship

The UK Government is to slash financial support for asylum seekers, which will have a shocking impact on families seeking protection in the UK and will drive children further into poverty.  The Government is also consulting on plans to remove support for those whose asylum applications have been turned down, a move which has been called dangerous and unfair by the Scottish Refugee Council, who urge people to oppose the plans.  More...

National Adoption register change

St. Andrew’s Children’s Society, one of Scotland’s oldest adoption agencies, will take over the running of Scotland’s National Adoption Register following the British Association for Adoption and Fostering BAAF’s sudden closure.  Third Force News  Read more

Isolation and Hunger: the reality of the school holidays for struggling families 

This report from Kellogs, details the worrying trend of children going hungry during the school holidays, because their families cannot afford the extra food required during these periods and explores the different responses taken to this issue across the country.   More..

Living Standards, Poverty and Inequality in the UK 2015

The Institute for Fiscal Studies predicts that one in four children in the UK will be living in absolute poverty by 2020 in this new report.  The report finds that two thirds of households  living in poverty are now in work and while the new living wage will help in some cases, families are still likely to be worse off because of cuts to benefits and tax credits. roshni: Reports on Children's Rights and Exploitation

Roshni were recently commissioned by the Scottish Government to conduct a short research project seeking the views of minority ethnic children and young people on children’s rights.  The report produced at the end of this project can be viewed here. More...

On the 20th of May 2015 roshni hosted - Exploiting, Exploited: A National Discussion on Child Sexual Exploitation and Radicalisation which brought together minority ethnic young people and policymakers to have a free-flowing discussion on CSE and radicalisation, as well as the common threads running through both issues.  A brief report has been produced, detailing the main themes emerging from the discussion and roshni’s thoughts moving forward. Impacts of Welfare Reform on Staff & Services

At GCVS we know welfare reforms haven't only had an impact on those directly affected by them - staff, volunteers, services and community groups have also been affected. We want to explore these impacts in more detail and invite you and your colleagues to share your experiences and views. Children, Young People and Families Intervention Fund 

The Scottish Government has announced  the new Children, Young People and Families Early Intervention and Adult Learning and Empowering Communities (ALEC) Funds for national voluntary organisations. Closing date for both funds - 30th September 2015 at 12 noon.  More...

Starbucks Youth Action Programme 

Grants of up to £1,000 are available for projects that work with young people aged 16 - 24 who are not in education or employment. To apply, two young people need to lead the project and engage a further 50 young people throughout the course of the project.  Applications are open now with grants awarded monthly until March 2016.  More...

CashBack for Communities small grants scheme  

Volunteer led youth groups in Scotland can apply for up to £1,000 to support the start-up costs of new projects or groups or up to £2,000 to support projects run by existing local groups. To be eligible the applicant needs to be a member of one of the six partnership organisations: the Scout Association; Girl guiding Scotland; Boys Brigade; the Girls' Brigade in Scotland; Clubs for Young People (Scotland) and Youth Scotland. BBC Children In Need – Small Grants Programme

Grants of up to £10,000 are available for projects that help children and young people experiencing; illness, distress, abuse or neglect; any kind of disability; behavioural or psychological difficulties; and / or living in situations of deprivation.  Closing date - 1st September 2015.  More...

BBC Children in Need Main Grant Programme

Funding for grants of over £10,000 is available to organisations that work with young people who are suffering from illness; distress; abuse or neglect; are disabled; have behavioural or psychological difficulties; or are living in poverty or situations of deprivation.  Closing date - 15th September 2015.  More...

Funding to Support Children with Genetic Disorders

Genetic Disorders UK’s 2016 Jeans for Genes grants programme offers grants of between £500 and £25,000 to charities and support groups that care for children affected by a genetic disorder such as cystic fibrosis, haemophilia and sickle cell.  Closing date - 30th September 2015.  More...

Nuffield Foundation - Research and Innovation Grants 

There are four grant programmes that support research and innovation for beneficial social change. These are Law in Social Society; Education; Children and Families; and Open Door which is for projects that advance social wellbeing, but lie outside the Foundation's main programme areas. Grants are for research projects; practical experimental; and development projects (often in voluntary sector organisations). Grants normally range between £10,000 and £250,000.  The next deadline for submitting outline applications is the 2nd November 2015. More...

Rosa: Funding to Tackle FGM 

Funded by Comic Relief, Rosa will make 8 - 10 grants of between £500 and £5,000 to voluntary and Community groups to tackle Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the UK. Grants can be used towards training, research, mentoring, networking, and the delivery of advice. Closing date - 5pm, 14th September 2015.  More...

Volant Charitable Trust: Funding to Alleviate Effects of Poverty on Women & Children 

Registered charities whose purpose is to alleviate poverty and social deprivation with particular emphasis on children and women's issues have the opportunity to apply for funding through the Volant Charitable Trust.  For projects based in Scotland only, with funding requests of up to and including £10,000 per annum, applications are dealt with by Foundation Scotland. Closing date - 8th January 2016.  More...

Inter Faith Youth Trust Small Grants Programme Open to Applications in UK 

Grants are available for organisations involved in inter faith projects for young people that take place in the UK during Inter Faith Week. Closing date - 15 September 2015.  More...

Buttle UK: Funding to Support Vulnerable Young People

The Small grants programme provides funding for essential items to children and young people whose health, safety and well-being are at risk. The School Fees programme provides support to transforms the lives of vulnerable children (aged 11 and over) by funding places at schools with a safe and supportive environment. The Support for Young People programme provides tailored funding packages of up to £2,000 available for young people aged 16-20.  More...

Hilden Charitable Fund 

The Hilden Charitable Fund makes grants to projects that address disadvantage, notably by supporting causes which are less popular. In particular, the Fund wants to support projects that address homelessness; supports asylum seekers and refugees; support community based initiatives for disadvantaged young people 16 - 25; and penal affairs. The average grant awarded is £5,000 and preference is given to supporting small community organisations with an income of less than £500,000 per year. The Trust will consider funding project as well as core running costs of organisations.

The Hedley Foundation 

The Hedley Foundation invites registered charities in the UK to apply for up to £5,000 support mainly young people with their education, creation, support, training, health and welfare. The Foundation also support disabled people and the terminally ill with provision of specialist equipment and support for carers.  The Trustees meet six times a year. The closing date for a meeting is three weeks beforehand.  More...

Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme (REC) 2014-2020 

European Programme which aims to make people's rights and freedoms effective in practice by making them better known and more consistently applied across the EU. The programme also promotes the rights of the child and the principles of non discrimination and gender equality, including projects to combat violence against women and children. More...

Glasgow Rape Crisis Rosey Project

The Rosey Project is the Support and Prevention Programme for young people at Glasgow Rape Crisis, providing support and education to young people aged 13-25.  More...

Technology to protect girls from female genital mutilation

Researchers at Coventry University have created a new app, endorsed by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, to help protect young girls and women from female genital mutilation. 

  • PETALS,  which works across most mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets and lap tops via an internet browser, is aimed primarily at young girls living in affected communities and at risk from FGM. It can also be used as an educational tool to teach young people and others the facts and realities of FGM.  The app avoids using photographs, diagrams and medical language to make it accessible to young people  More...
     
  • United to END FGM is an e-learning tool, offering information and practical advice about female genital mutilation (FGM). There are three modules, the first of which aims to improve the support and treatment offered to women and girls in Europe living with or at risk of genital mutilation, by encouraging a more specialised gender- and culture-sensitive approach in the healthcare services. The modules can be accessed FREE OF CHARGE until the end of 2015. More...

Roshni SAFE Storybook 

The roshni SAFE project raises awareness about child wellbeing, safety and how to best protect children and young people. Roshni have published the first SAFE Storybook which takes the key themes of SAFE sessions and presents them in the form of five engaging and informative stories, aimed at children aged 6-11.  Each story uses simple messages and accessible artwork to teach children how to stay safe from harm and encourages them not to stay quiet if they are suffering abuse. It can be used by parents, teachers and other frontline staff to help children understand these issues and encourage them to talk openly about them.  To obtain copies of the SAFE Storybook contact info@roshni.org.uk. GCVS Everyone’s Children  Autumn  2015 training  programme

The Everyone’s Children Training programme, funded by Scottish Government is offered to Third Sector organisations operating in Glasgow. 

These sessions provide a policy and practice context for key third sector roles in implementing the Getting It Right For Every Child programme which promotes the wellbeing of children, young people and families in their families and communities, and develop organisational capacity. Training events also encourage the sharing of views and experiences with colleagues and support the developing of useful networks around the work as the GIRFEC approach becomes more prominent in the delivery of services in Glasgow.
