Fayetteville Writing Circle

I received this letter on July 4. I want to share it in its entirety

since we don't mention Fayetteville very much. --Alison

Alison,

I know I went on about the Fayetteville Writers' Circle at our meeting last week, but I can't seem to help bragging about our writing circle whenever I'm with other writers. I feel so blessed to be part of this group. In particular, I am most proud of the leader of our group.

Laurie Reichart is a wonderful director - welcoming and supportive as well as organized and efficient. Even with her busy schedule (I don't know anyone who travels as much as she does), she still keeps us informed and in touch. She is knowledgeable about the mechanics of writing - eagerly sharing her newly learned skills whenever she attends workshops or conventions. We find we are constantly evolving. She listens when one of us has concerns about the direction the group is taking and takes each of our opinions into consideration when making any changes. I'm not sure how, but at meetings she manages to keep us on task as well as on topic, even though some of us are prone to run on . . .

Anyone interested in forming their own group should join us a time or two to get some ideas. I have learned so much in the 18 months I have been with this group! I have told them before, and I'll say it again now - they have helped make me a better writer!

Thanks for your time and write on!
 Donna Patrick

The VWS Fayetteville Writing Circle meets at the Fayetteville library on the 1st and 3rd Sundays from 1-3. Visit them to see how a well-run writing circle should go. Thank you Laurie for your time and your passion to help others improve their stories.

Grammar by Any Other Name
Smells Sweeter

I'd just as soon not tell you this, but, full disclosure: my workshop this Saturday will touch on some things we have come to call Grammar.

OMG! Now let me pull you out from under the bed, kicking and screaming, and say that I've tried very hard to camouflage it. Yes, we'll use a few big words, but I'll tell you that you don't have to remember the word. All you have to do is see the awesome writing tool that the word represents.

We'll be using colored pencils because we'll be talking about all these different tools in the
writers' paint box. Tools that will help you take your reader to a deeper place subliminally through sound devices and figurative language. Tools that will vary your sentence structure so that you can write prose like a pro. Or like a poet. Tools that can help you find your own, unique style and voice. We'll define some words that writers toss around all the time (like style and voice).

At its core, good writing is about the word you choose and how you combine it with other words into a sentence. No matter how great your plot, your character development, or your dramatic elements, in the end, it comes down to which word you call and how well it does your bidding.

The Word and the Sentence
This Saturday at Whole Hog Cafe         The fun begins at 10 a.m.

Her posts are too long.
You have to have a taste for snark.
But, she's funny, and she often nails the writing advice.

Never forget: This very moment, we can change our lives. There never was a moment, and never will be, when we are without the power to alter our destiny. This second, we can turn the tables on Resistance. This second, we can sit down and do our work.

Meet a Village Writer - Ken Lockhart
From the moment Ken Lockhart arrived with his aspiration to become the "Village Idiot," we knew we had a humor writer in our midst. Currently, Ken is working on a series of short stories set in the fictional reservation town of Lame Weasel, Montana. He's also a cryptozoologist and can tell you about the Ozarks' six-foot-tall owl known as Big Hoot.

Two Important Reminders!

#1 Our policy has always been that for $10 you can review a workshop that you have previously taken. This is important, because each time we come to a workshop, we are at a different place in our writing. Many of you took our workshops before we had the workbooks. What a great refresher to work through them again with the workbook.

#2  Anyone 18 and under, or still in high school, can always take our workshops for free! If you know a young writer, pass this on.

Our library mouse is

growing up fast!

Happy (12th) Birthday, Levi.
