President's Message

Don't be fooled by all of the "Back to School" and "End of Summer" sales!  There is still a lot of great weather and summer fun left to be had!  As we move into August, the Twinsburg Chamber is still busy with planning and organizing for the rest of this year, and looking forward into the 2016 year.

A Thank You is in order to all of the members who attended our annual Member Appreciation Picnic.  An overflow crowd was on hand to see our Chamber Champions get their well-deserved acknowledgement for going above & beyond.  Awardees were Final Touch Construction, Nina/Michelle Salon, Cardinal Health at Home, and Red's Catering.  Thank you to these and all of our members who step up to pitch in.  We also honored and thanked Roger Greene and his staff at the Twinsburg Hilton Garden Inn for hosting this annual get-together and their commitment to the overall Chamber's success.

Looking into August, several of our Board Members have volunteered to help prepare and serve at the Annual Twins Days welcome hot dog dinner.  Speaking of twins, treat yourself to a good time at the Twins Days Double Take Parade on Saturday morning, August 8th.  If you are really looking for a treat, stop by the Twins Days Festival, behind R.B. Chamberlin Middle School all day Saturday & Sunday, August 8-9.  Spectacular fireworks show at dusk on Saturday night!

Also in August, our Chamber embarks on a new venture, "First Friday Networking on the Go".  This will give Twinsburg Chamber Members an opportunity to network with professionals from Cuyahoga Falls, Hudson and Kent Area Chambers of Commerce.  This event will be held on August 7th, 8-9am at Great Lakes Honda in Akron. Participants in this first-Friday program are asked to bring business cards and your best business introduction! Please register here!

We are also looking forward to hosting Congressman Dave Joyce on August 19th, at Signature of Solon, for our 3Chamber August luncheon.  Please take the time now to take care of your reservation for this well-attended event. Please remember that we have only a certain amount of seating, and this is a 3Chamber event.  Reservations are required.

On behalf of our Board, we would like to wish all of the best to Kevin Gehrt and his family.  Kevin has served alongside of me as 1st Vice President for the past two years.  He has been transferred to Switzerland, and will be sorely missed.  Personally, his presence and guidance has been invaluable.  Good Luck!

Last, but certainly not least, if you have been thinking of becoming more involved with your Chamber of Commerce, now is a great time to step up!  We are currently projecting 3 openings for new (or returning) Board of Directors members in 2016.  Yes, we do a lot of work, but we have fun as well.  Consider joining us for a fresh look at the Twinsburg Chamber of Commerce.  As always, contact Abby or Paula at the Chamber Office for more information or reservations!

"No One Understands You And What to Do About It"
by Heidi Grant Halvorson

Have you ever felt you’re not getting through to the person you’re talking to, or not coming across the way you intend? You’re not alone, but there is something we can do about it. In No one Understands You, Heidi Grant Halvorson explains why we’re often misunderstood and how we can fix that.

Most of us assume that other people see us as we see ourselves and as we truly
are. This is just not true. Our everyday interactions are colored by three types of
subtle biases that distort how others see us—and also shape our perceptions of
them.  Halverson argues that you can clarify the message you’re sending once
you understand these biases and respond to them in a productive manner.

• Trust. Are you friend or foe?  The very first thing a person will seek to determine
about you is whether he or she can trust you.  The decision to trust is an
unconscious one based on how well you project warmth and competence.  Convey
warmth by being attentive, showing empathy and concern and be fair and true to
your word.  Show competence by making eye contact and use confident body
language.  Do not point out your flaws or brag about your accomplishments.  Let
your actions speak for you instead.  Be willing to trust first to put the other person
at ease and they will develop a true picture of who you are.

• Power. How much influence do you have over me? Most people in positions of
power do not have the time or desire to get to know those who are in lower positions because they are too focused on their own success.   You must demonstrate that you are useful to those who have power over you and that you can help them achieve their goals.  There are several effective ways to do this.  Make your bosses goals and challenges your goals and challenges are and provide assistance where he or she needs it the most.   You can also stand out by anticipating the needs of the powerful person before he or she asks and provide solutions to them.  Be someone who helps the powerful person reach his or her goals and he will find it worth the time  and energyto see you for who you really are

• Ego. Do you make me feel insecure?  Those who are effectedby the ego bias have one goal-- to protect and enhance their self-esteem. If you are a threat to someone’s sense of well-being they will never see who you really are.  If you want to make someone secure about their abilities be modest and humble about your own successes and admit past or current difficulties you have experienced. You can also be affirming and honestly praise the persons specific accomplishments and qualities.  Mention specific examples and ask for advice.  It is also important to promote a strong team atmosphere.   Emphasize something you have in common with the perceiver to make him a part of your group. Then, your success and accomplishments will be a source of pride and self-esteem for him instead of a threat.
Whether you're in sales, marketing, or leading a team, how you are perceived by others plays a huge role. This book will help you make a good first impression, communicate more clearly, send the messages you intend to send, and improve your personal relationships. You’ll also become a fairer and more accurate judge of others.
