  • Highlights from early July

  • Upcoming workshops and volunteer opportunities

  • CRUW Youth Program Open House August 29th

  • Three Sisters in the Kitchen: Traditional Maya Cooking Workshop

In early July, the Medicine Collective led tea workshops with the Urban Native Youth Alliance's Kinnections program, staff in UBC's Faculty of Land and Food Systems, and members of the public. We extend a big thank-you to the staff at LFS for joining us for their professional development day, and for all the great work they do every day that supports us!

Meanwhile, groups have visited the garden from the Summer Science youth program and Permaculture Design Course to help care for, learn about, and harvest the plants in the garden. Volunteers planted kale, radishes, peas, and dill, and transplanted winter broccoli; volunteers also helped with our big garlic harvest, which is now hanging to dry over the Harvest Hut awning where the Saturday UBC Farm market takes place.

The Feast Bowl interns are working hard to preserve the bounty of our harvest by processing zucchini, radishes, and basil for use at meals throughout the fall and winter. We are getting excited for our meal next Wednesday July 29th, where we'll be making buffalo wraps and zucchini bread!

The CRUW youth program was highlighted this past week in a CBC radio piece as one of the CRUW participants shares her story of being an Indigenous youth in foster care. Listen here.

Don't forget to check out our website and Facebook page for regular updates, photos, volunteer opportunities, and more!

How to volunteer for garden volunteer sessions: we work in the garden rain or shine, so come dressed for the weather. We have extra rain boots, gardening tools, and gloves to share. Bring a snack and water bottle - bring friends and family (of any age) too! No experience necessary. You will find us in the Indigenous Health Garden at the UBC Farm. The most up-to-date directions to the UBC Farm can be found here. Once at the Farm, you can follow the "Aboriginal Health Gardens" signs to find our garden here.

How to volunteer for the Feast Bowl: join us at the UBC First Nations Longhouse (1985 West Mall) at or after 9:30AM to help us harvest or cook, or 12:30PM to eat lunch with us. Extra help from any age or skill level is always appreciated, especially in the kitchen. If you can only join us for lunch, we encourage you to come anyway and we look forward to sharing a delicious meal with you!

Note: if you plan to bring a large group, please let us know ahead of time at hannah.lewis@ubc.ca.

CRUW Youth Program Open House August 29th

We are excited to invite you to join the CRUW youth program on Saturday August 29th, 2015 to celebrate its fourth annual open house at the UBC Farm! CRUW (Culturally Relevant Urban Wellness) brings Aboriginal youth in foster care together with new immigrant youth, engaging in land-based practice to support positive identity, concrete skills, healthy relationships and leadership competencies to support the transition into independent living. The program, now in its fourth year, supports multi-year, faculty-led research into culturally-relevant land-based youth engagement out of the Indigenous Health Research & Education Garden.

Join us for the day or register for a particular activity block, and participate in capacity-building, knowledge exchange and relationship-building between youth participants, NGO’s, funding organizations, and UBC. Morning refreshments and a picnic lunch will be provided. Saturday August 29th, 2015, 9:30am to 3:30pm.

For more information, view the full invitation here. RSVP by August 14, 2015 to Madelynn Slade at madelynn_slade@vacfss.com
