Construction Underway at Interim Pilot Parks on University Street

Construction is underway on installation of two interim pilot parks on First Hill!

Despite funding for park land acquisition, rising land values have proved difficult to overcome and the City of Seattle has been unsuccessful in bringing parks and open spaces to the dense and highly urban First Hill neighborhood. To address this problem, SDOT adopted the First Hill Public Realm Action Plan and a tactical strategy to create park space in the public right of way.

The PRAP develops plans to install two interim pavement to parks projects; at 9th & University and at the intersection on Union St, University St, and Boylston Ave. These plans were approved by the community at an open house in January, and construction is underway now. Installation should be complete by the end of the month.

SDOT, Parks, DPD, FHIA, and the Seattle Police Department will be working together to monitor the use of these spaces in an effort to build community and improve public safety.

The First Hill Improvement Association is working to activate the two spaces in conjunction with the First Hill Park and linking to Freeway Park, creating a necklace of green public spaces along this important community corridor. Swedish Medical Center and the City of Seattle are seeking candidates to serve on the Swedish Medical Center First Hill Campus Standing Master Plan Advisory Committee.

The Advisory Committee is composed of 12 members and 3 alternates who represent Swedish Medical Center First Hill Campus, surrounding  neighborhoods and the City residents at large. This group advises the City and Swedish Medical Center on issues related to the design and construction of new buildings and other projects proposed under the City-adopted Swedish Medical Center Master Plan.

Members serve two-year renewable terms. Candidates should be involved in and have a good understanding of the community. Skills in land use and zoning, architecture, or economic development are desirable but not required.

The committee will meet several times a year to review progress towards meeting the goals and objectives of the Swedish Medical Master Plan, and comment on project designs and other elements of the First Hill Campus Master Plan.
