             NEWSLETTER & SCHEDULE
August 10th, 2015
Dear Friends:

My how time flies!  Last year at this time we were still putting the final touches on Mezzrow.  My anxiety levels were high (not that they've relaxed any) as we approached our opening night.  I had no idea how we would be received or perceived.  I wasn't sure if anyone would like it or not.  Would it be a flop?  Wilner's folly?  Well, now we've been open nearly one full year.  The last weekend of this month will be our special commemorative celebration of one full year of Mezzrow.  It's been an amazing year for me and my partner Mitch Borden - to plan and build a club from the ground up and to decorate it and give it a personality.  We chose to name it "Mezzrow" as a tip of the hat to musician Mezz Mezzrow, who's book "Really The Blues", inspired me.  He became our symbol of late night jazz music, basement speakeasies and interracial harmony through art.  I'm delighted to say that Mezzrow has worked out splendidly.  It's been really well received.  We got picked as the "best piano bar of 2015" by New York Magazine (CLICK to read).  We've had two feature articles in the New York Times (CLICK #1) (CLICK #2).  We've had Ron Carter perform twice.  We've had Buster Williams perform three times.  In fact, the roster of pianists and bassists who have graced our stage this year is staggering - literally a who's who of modern day jazz piano duos.  What's great is that we've also had a nice turn out from younger musicians who have come around to participate and jam.  We've also tapped into a more sophisticated cliental that are really looking for a "listening room" - a mini-concert hall, where the artists and the audience can commune in jazz reverie.

I want to mention some of the special shows we have coming up in the remainder of this month.  I'm including the links to the site where, if you like, you can advance purchase a seat in our 34 seat music room -

On Friday, Aug. 21 and Saturday, Aug. 22 we have the legendary Andy Bey performing solo piano and voice.  If you've never heard Andy, this is a great opportunity to do so.

On Tuesday, Aug. 25 and Wednesday, Aug. 26 we have pianist Ethan Iverson with his very special guest Tom Harrell coming in.  Ethan has been a big supporter of the club and is responsible for bringing Ron Carter to Mezzrow.

On Friday, Aug. 28th and Satuday, Aug 29th is our official ONE YEAR CELEBRATION weekend.  For this weekend I'm excited to present one of my favorite pianists and my teacher, the great Kenny Barron who will be coming in with his long-time associate the great Ray Drummond on bass.  This will be sure to be a joyful weekend in the spirit of Bradley's.

As always, we've been offering reciprocity between mama Smalls and baby Mezzrow - pay a cover at Mezzrow and get a pass for Smalls for the same night - bounce back and forth.

I send you all my best wishes and look forward to seeing you at the clubs!

Regards,

Spike

NOW: A cover paid at Mezzrow also gets you admission to Smalls.
