Dear <<First Name>>,

Welcome to RNZSPCA e-news, keeping you up to date with news and current issues from SPCA’s nationwide. In this issue find more on our petition to ban rodeos, an update on Mezza (our appeal cat), how to register for Cupcake Day, and much more.

SPCA calling for a ban on rodeos

SPCA has joined with SAFE and Farmwatch to call for a ban on rodeos. We are completely opposed to rodeos. They can be a terrifying and cruel experience for animals, yet in New Zealand this is currently completely legal. We believe no animal should endure such cruelty, especially simply for the entertainment of people. Please show your opposition by signing our petition to end rodeo cruelty for good.

Zoe’s second chance

Zoe has had a rough start, and it’s likely that she has had some bad experiences with people in her past. When Zoe first arrived at SPCA Waikato she was extremely timid and particularly scared of men.  After an initial vet check Zoe spent several months with a foster family and finally learned what it was like to be part of a loving family. Zoe is now available for adoption and is looking for a permanent home. To find out more, visit SPCA Waikato's website

Mezza happy and healthy in new home

You may remember the story of Mezza, the cat with a mummified leg who was rescued earlier this year. We are delighted to share that she has found a loving family and is now named Grace. It is thanks to our supporters that Grace was able to be rescued, treated, and given the chance at a happy, healthy life. If you want to make a donation to support SPCA centres to rescue and rehome animals like Mezza click here.

SPCA encourages McDonalds to go Blue Tick

McDonalds has announced it will be serving free range eggs by the end of next year. “This is a huge step in the right direction by a company that purchases nearly 13 million eggs every year,” says Ric Odom, CEO RNZSPCA. “We encourage McDonald’s to ensure all its suppliers of free-range eggs also carry the SPCA Blue Tick to reassure consumers that the eggs are genuinely free-range.” The SPCA Blue Tick certifies that products have been farmed to the SPCA’s high animal welfare standards.

Shelter Buddy

SPCA is set to launch a nationwide system that will allow SPCA’s to track animals around the country. SPCA New Zealand CEO Ric Odom said, "it will create a record for every animal and for the person who is attached to that animal. And that's accessible across the whole country. The positive impact on animal welfare will be enormous.” Shelter Buddy is currently being piloted in 8 SPCA’s across the country before a planned nationwide rollout.

Desexing caravan to provide free desexing in North Taranaki

SPCAs nationwide receive over 60,000 animals annually, who‘ve been abandoned, abused, or born on the streets. Often we find our resources stretched to the limit. From 3-21 August and 3-21 September, the SPCA Desexing caravan will be at the North Taranaki SPCA providing free pet desexing to qualifying residents in the area with the aim to reduce the number of pets being born unwanted, and ultimately reduce the suffering of animals who have no one to care for them.
