Residents Parking Schemes
The Residents’ parking schemes in Cheylesmore should have started last Wednesday 15th July with warning letters being issued for the first two weeks. Unfortunately there was a ‘technical glitch’ which has delayed the start. See the statement below from the Council Communication office. It is still planned that as soon as the correct signs are in place the Civil Enforcement Officers will patrol these areas and issue warning notices for 14 days.

“We are in the process of putting up the signs and laying out the bays for the resident parking schemes in parts of Earlsdon and Cheylesmore with the aim of starting to issue warning tickets from Monday or Tuesday next week. We will do this for two weeks before we issue the proper penalty charge notices.

“A small number of signs were put up facing the wrong way and some were the wrong size. This was noticed quickly and corrected. New zone entry signs are also going up with the last ones set for completion early next week.

“The new zones are being introduced following public consultation and only in roads where the majority of people said they wanted resident parking. The zones have been tailored to best suit the needs of local people and as we will review it carefully over the coming months.”

Cheylesmore Has More!
Yesterday, Cheylesmore Ward residents decided where the remaining section 106 money from Asda, Daventry Road, was to be spent. This is the first time that “Participatory Budgeting” has been used in Coventry. It’s about allowing the people to decide where the money is to be spent.

In ranking sequence, here is the list of the projects, who will receive their requested amount: Black Sun Karate – Tracksuits, Black Sun Karate - Karate Mats, Friends of Quinton Pool, Cheylesmore Good Neighbours – IT project for the elderly, Community Centre – Ventilation, Murray Lodge – Gardening, Sewing Lessons - Somali Women, Murray Lodge – Cycle Workshop, Cheylesmore Community Centre – Mirrors, Cheylesmore Community Centre - Café Area, Murray Lodge – Catering, Kidz Klub, South Coventry Money Advice, National Childbirth trust – breast feeding project. The next 2 projects were equal on points and so shared the remaining money: Social Club Allotments and Somali Cupping Therapy.

This was a very successful event organised by “Participatory Budgeting” consultants, Council Officers, your Cheylesmore Councillors and a small group of Cheylesmore residents. Many hours went into the planning and organising of this event. We’d like to say a huge THANK YOU and Well Done to everyone involved in “Have More in Cheylesmore”.

Photos from the event will be available on their Facebook page Have More in Cheylesmore. However, they will take a few days to upload so please check later.

Whitley Bridge Update
Works are now nearing completion with both new slip-roads now open. Leaf Lane slip road is due to open 27th July with total completion by 5th August.

Residents who drive around Whitley Island have asked how vehicles from Leaf Lane will access the Whitley Island as white hatch makings appear to extend past the Island towards London Road. This is the response from Ian Lewis, Senior Project Manager, Coventry City Council:

See below plan I have marked up with the road layout for the completed works on Whitley Junction.

The design has allowed for traffic exiting Leaf Lane and the Whitley Business Park to enter the exit slip road in one of the two designated lanes. Road markings and advance signage will promote the lanes with inside lane exiting towards the City Centre and outside lane merging to the roundabout, heading towards London Road/Toll Bar Island. The merge length is in excess of 30m and the markings have been applied to suit.

To assist with traffic exiting Leaf Lane two sets of traffic signals have been installed. One at the top of Leaf Lane and one on the new bridge. This will hold back traffic exiting Whitley Business Park so that traffic exiting Leaf Lane does not have to compete for road space and will allow the movement of vehicles from Leaf Lane into one of the two slip road lanes.

Friends of Sherbourne River
Did you know that Quinton Pools feeds a stream that joins the River Sherbourne near the JLR site?

From Paul Maddocks:
Friends of Sherbourne River is a new group which was formed by those who have concerns and interest in the health and future of the river.

We have meetings and clean-up days along the river. Plus we have been working closely with many agencies who control the river and the land connecting to it. We want to improve the quality of the river, to protect all its wildlife and provide a walking route along all of its length. Not many people know of Coventry's Sherbourne River and that it flows through the city centre as most of it is covered or built over.

The river starts at Corly Rocks flows through Coundon Wedge, Allesley, Spon End then it goes undergroud by Ikea under the city centre. You can see it in a small part behind the Burgess in Palmer Lane then it goes underground passed the swimming baths and comes out at the bottom of Gosford Street. It then flows through Charterhouse fields then through Whitley joining the River Sowe just passed the Jaguar plant. They both flow into the Avon.

Whitley Parking Issues
The problems continue with JLR workers parking in Whitley’s streets. Roger was out there early on Friday morning discussing the problems with JLR security staff and residents. Several JLR company cars were spotted and reported.

Residents ask us “Why don’t the Civil Enforcement Officers do more?”. Please see response from Adrian Williams, Service Supervisor, Parking Services Team:

We do issue penalty charge notices around the double yellow lines and if residents call us and say that a vehicle has parked across their dropped kerb.

Failing that we are powerless to enforce any other contraventions as there is no single yellow line, limited waiting or permit zone in the location. We cannot issue for obstruction as this is a police power, but we will still continue to enforce where we can.

To report an illegally parked car phone Parking Services team 024 7683 3400 or Email: parkingenforcement@coventry.gov.uk

Remember if you spot a JLR company car in you street  then please email the location, date, time, model and registration to cheylesmore@coventryconservatives.com.  Note - a JLR Company car number plate will have Jaguar Land Rover, Land Rover or Land Rover UK in small letters under the registration number.

Roger sends special thanks to residents who have already passed on details to him.

Exminster Road Closure
Thursday 23rd July, Exminster Road will see a total road closure while a new top surface of tarmac is laid. The works will only take a few hours to complete but all vehicles will need to be off the road to enable the works to be done. Residents should have received a letter from the Council confirming the date.

Verge Protection Work on Quinton Road
As part of the Council’s on–going work to repair the city’s verges, Quinton Road is scheduled to take place on Wednesday 22 July 2015 and will take approximately 2 days to complete.

The work incorporates installing wooden bollards to the existing verge between Franciscan Road and number 72.
