Welcome to our August 2015 email newsletter
|
|
Dear Residents and Friends
In my last newsletter introduction I highlighted some of the organised community events and activities taking place over the summer. There are, though, plenty of opportunities for people to enjoy the local surrounds in their own time and at their own pace, not least in our many and varied public spaces.
Last year the Town Council produced a booklet ‘Exploring Baildon: A Guide to Public Spaces’. The Guide does not claim to be comprehensive but nevertheless contains information, beautiful illustrations and photographs on spaces located in every corner of the town. A trial print run proved very popular, such that we have almost run out of copies and it has been decided to re-print. Please contact the Town Council to order a copy, following which it will be available in local information centres. A free copy can also be downloaded from the Town Council website.
It is with great pleasure I am able to confirm that the ‘green lungs’ in and around Baildon will once again be supplemented by the provision of a Countryside Centre at Bracken Hall. Previously run by Bradford Council, this will now be managed on a smaller floor-space by Baildon Town Council under the stewardship of the newly-appointed Centre Manager, Hayley Gillard. Look out over the summer for much more news on the development of Bracken Hall – and do get in touch if you would like to be involved in any way!
One important facility provided at Bracken Hall will be a base for walks and walkers. The Baildon Walking Weekend, which takes place on 7th, 8th and 9th August, celebrates Baildon’s status as a ‘Walkers are Welcome Town’. This status has numerous benefits and supplements the many footpaths, guided and self-guided walks in Baildon and the wider district. Indeed, if we stich all these elements together, there has never been a better time to experience the great outdoors.
With best wishes
Joe Ashton
Chair of Baildon Town Council

Baildon appoints new Town Clerk
|
|
Baildon Town Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Tom Ferry as Town Clerk. Tom will replace Jean Yule who retires as Town Clerk at the end of August.
Tom is a qualified Local Council Clerk with over seven years’ experience as a Clerk in Yorkshire and is a trainer for the Society of Local Council Clerks helping others to achieve the qualification.
|
|
|
Tom also brings to the post a wealth of skills, experience and knowledge from his full and varied career in the Royal Corps of Signals, then as a project officer for the Railway industry, followed by running a family business.
Born in Dundee, and having lived in London for some years as a young school lad, Tom and his family fell in love with Yorkshire when they moved here during Tom’s time in the forces. Tom is married with two grown up children and three grand-children and is also an active member of a number of voluntary groups in his local community.
Tom enjoys being a Local Council Clerk and finds it tremendously rewarding to see what can be achieved by a local council for the benefit of its community. He is looking forward to joining the Baildon Town Council staff team and to serving the residents of Baildon and its councillors.
Warm welcome to Tom.

Thanks to all who are helping to make the public spaces in Baildon bright and cheerful with wonderful floral displays. Thanks to Baildon in Bloom, which the Town Council is pleased to support, to the many local Baildon businesses, and to Bradford Council's parks and gardens department.

You may have noticed that the town centre looks more festive with the installation of new bunting for the summer season. Installed in time for the Baildon Proms night on 4th July, the bunting will remain up until the end of September.
The bunting has been bought by the Town Council to brighten up Baildon centre during the summer months and to give a cheery backdrop to events that take place, just as we do with the Christmas lights in winter. We have invested in top grade materials that will stand up to all weathers and last for years and hence the purchase is value for money.
We have made a start by concentrating the bunting in the town centre, and just as we did with Christmas lights we will review this for next year and may extend its scope if affordable and if required.
Many thanks to thank Bradford Council for facilitating the use of its property to support the bunting and Christmas Plus, our suppliers and installers, for discounting our installation costs and agreeing to store it over the winter at no charge.

Baildon Town Council is pleased to have been able to fund the replacement of a number of litter bins around Baildon.
The Town Council’s Environmental Warden, Mark Scrimshaw, identified some of the bins most in need of replacement and liaised with Bradford Council officers who undertook the work.
All but the one outside Coach Road shops are plastic and should remain looking neat for many years.
New bins were replaced at the following locations:- Otley Road, junction with Green Lane; Coach Road, junction with Glenaire Drive; Coach Road, outside Post Office opposite Roberts Park entrance; Otley Road, two bins outside the row of shops at Woodbottom next to the junction with Woodcot Ave; Cliffe Lane, junction with Green Lane; Baildon Road outside the Coop.
The Town Council is aware that other bins are in need of replacement and will be looking to replace more in the future.
|
|
You may have come across pop up restaurants and pop up shops. But have you come across pop up poo posters? Thanks to the Town Council’s Environmental Warden, Mark Scrimshaw, we now have pop up poo posters in Baildon.
This is Mark’s latest initiative to help tackle the problem of dog fouling. His collection of highly visible posters pops up like a cluster of mushrooms at strategic locations as a reminder to dog walkers to clear up after their dogs.
Don’t worry if you think the posters are an eye sore. They will never be left in any one location for more than 24 hours.

And to all who turned up on the day to make it such a huge success.
It's great to have the Carnival once more firmly established in the Baildon calendar.

Baildon Town Council has received approval from Bradford MD Council to move forward with the Town Council’s application to gain Neighbourhood Planning Status. The next step will be to consult with Baildon residents before producing a Development Plan which will be put to a local referendum.
|
|
|
Parish and Town Councils along with established Neighbourhood Forums can apply to the Council for their area to be recognised as a Neighbourhood Area. Following this process the group can begin to produce a Neighbourhood Development Plan or Neighbourhood Development Order in accordance with the Neighbourhood Planning (General) Regulations 2012.
Neighbourhood Development Plans: These plans are policy documents prepared by the community and set out a framework for future development, including design standards and infrastructure. They must be prepared in accordance with the statutory Planning Regulations and following a local referendum they can be adopted by the Council for them to be formally used and recognised in the planning process and part of the Local Plan.

|
|
1.0 - 3.0pm, Baildon Methodist Church, £3 includes refreshments. All welcome!
The film is set in north-east England during the 1984-85 coal miners' strike and it’s against this backdrop that a young lad discovers his passion for ballet.
This classic stars Jamie Bell as 11-year-old Billy, an aspiring dancer dealing with the negative stereotype of the male ballet dancer, Gary Lewis as his coal miner father, Jamie Draven as Billy's older brother, and Julie Walters as his ballet teacher.
A lively 1980s soundtrack featuring amongst others T-Rex, Jam, and Clash, keeps pace with the drama.
