Show support for reduced car parking charges

On Thursday 23 July you will have a chance to show your support for reduced car parking charges in Weymouth and Portland.

The full Weymouth & Portland Borough Council will consider a report on the Council's car parking policy and decide on a course of action. This report was promoted by a petition organised by the Weymouth & Portland Chamber of Commerce.

The meeting will be held in the Ocean Room at Weymouth Pavilion at 7pm on Thursday 23 July and is open to the public.

Your presence will show that high parking charges are a real concern

The Council are obliged to consider the petition but they may decide to take no further action. By attending the meeting you will help the Council to see that this an issue of genuine concern to local businesses and residents.

The petition, which attracted over 1,100 signatures, states:

"We urge WPBC to actively engage in consultation with all members of the community with a goal of putting into effect a parking policy in keeping with the wishes of the majority of locals and visitors to our town and not one purely set up to raise revenue for the Council?”

Michelle Hind, President of the Weymouth & Portland Chamber of Commerce “Your Chamber needs YOU – together we are stronger, please join me at 7pm at the Pavilion Ocean Room, Weymouth on Thursday 23 July to show your support for lower parking charges in Weymouth & Portland.”

“By supporting this petition we can make a stand against the rise in parking charges which are used for revenue by the local authority. This practice is controversial and does not accord with the Government's recommendations to not do this. It could be seen that our local authority regards themselves in such high regard that they can make decisions without taking the Government's recommendations into consideration?"

"I am urging our council officers and members to think outside of the box, be radical and revolutionary – what about taking the long term approach to bridge the gap in revenue by generating income from solar panels installed in car parks or possibly introduce a small scale trial of renewable technology."

"Now is the time to invest in Weymouth & Portland by maintaining a realistic parking charge structure that balances with revenue generation, maintenance of assets and its wider economic, social , health and environmental duties and objectives.”

A Deregulation Bill and guidelines given Royal Assent in April recommends that parking charges are not used to make a profit and allowing the public to petition and appeal against the local authority’s decision to increase parking charges for revenue and against the hard ball approach taken by them in respect of parking fines.
