The Power of Support

Hey <<First Name>>!

Just wanted to send a quick note from my sprint of speaking engagements (8 talks, 4 cities, 2 countries, 1 month). This kind of pace is utterly exhausting. Thankfully, my last gig in June was in Columbus, Ohio, which is near Yellow Springs where I grew up. I was literally in the home stretch! That said, I arrived barely 24 hours before my last talk in Columbus, Ohio, quite weary from my flight from Oslo. Luckily, I stayed in the house I grew up in the first night instead of another hotel.

My last gig was near where I grew up in Ohio. This is me with my mother Deloria -  and yes, you *are* seeing double!

In my jet-lagged stupor, my inner critic (bless her heart) started right in on me: “You're so exhausted that everyone will see you're not on your game. You’re never going to be able to reach them in this state. You never should have invited your family and friends they're going to see you f**k up!”

But you know what? The closing keynote at the STC Summit I gave a few days later turned out to be an AMAZING example of what keeps me going! The audience loved my closing talk and even gave me a standing ovation (!!). I looked at the front row and saw my mother, grandfather, and our other family friends smiling and\proud. I was so moved by the appreciation that my eyes welled up with tears.

VIPS: My mom brought special guests: my 91 year old grandfather (who came all the way down from Detroit!), my favorite teacher Mrs. Julia Davis, and 6 family friends.

Coming off the stage, I was greeted by my favorite teacher from high school, Mrs. Davis, who also beamed with pride and glowed with appreciation. I thought about how much she encouraged me and has believed in me – how, since the tender age of 14, she saw greatness within me. As I hugged her to me, I lost it and couldn't stop crying.

I was so ecstatic to see Mrs. Julia Davis at my talk that I cried tears of joy.

I felt like the hometown hero. It was phenomenal, and I hit a grand slam: the perfect end to June's marathon of speaking engagements.

It made the last month all worth it.

Talk to you soon,
Denise

P.S. The power of support helps you when you put yourself out there – whether it’s on stage or in a brainstorming session at work – but so often we feel like we don't have support and doubt ourselves. When your inner critic shows up, know that I’ve got your back, because I’ve been there myself! That’s the impetus behind the book Banish Your Inner Critic that I’m writing. I want to make it easier for you to share your special gifts with the world.
