Optimum Health Begins Before Birth

Children can benefit from chiropractic care before they are born, by having a mother who receives prenatal chiropractic checkups.  A healthy diet, proper exercise, a stress free environment, and a chiropractic lifestyle help prepare for a happy, healthy baby.

The birth process may be one of the most traumatic events of our lives.  Even so-called "natural" birthing methods can stress a still developing spine.  The resulting irritation to the nervous system can be the cause of many newborn health complaints.  Colic, unexplained crying, poor appetite, breathing problems, and allergic reactions can often be traced to nervous system dysfunction caused by a malfunctioning spine.

Head support, followed by crawling, and a baby's first few steps should be followed by chiropractic checkups.  If neglected, the bumps and falls during this period of rapid growth may lead to serious spinal deformities later in life.  This can set the stage for scoliosis, "growing pains," and a weakened immune system response.

Chiropractic adjusting techniques are modified to fit a child's size, weight, and unique spinal problem.  Parents often report that their children seem healthier than other kids their age.

Many spinal problems seen in adults begin in childhood.  Proper spinal hygiene is an important key to better health.  Do you know a child who could benefit from chiropractic care?

The Chiropractic Lifestyle
Chiropractors are experts in the care of the bones, nerves, muscles and connective tissues that make up about 60% of your body.  All of the joints in your body are part of this musculo-skeletal system and its optimal function is necessary for overall good health.  Ask your Doctor of Chiropractic for more information about a care program that may include specific spinal adjustments, exercise recommendations, nutritional advice or other conservative methods of care based on your health history, age, current condition and lifestyle.

How Chiropractic Care Relates to Psoriasis

Description
Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition, usually characterized by raised red patches, often on the elbows, knees, torso, and scalp.  Most cases of psoriasis are fairly mild. However, the illness can be severe, with virtually the entire body covered with inflamed plaques or lesions. About 7 million Americans suffer from psoriasis. Each year, about 150,000 to 260,000 new cases of psoriasis are diagnosed, about 400 people receive social-security disability status for psoriasis, and another 400 people die of psoriasis-related illness.

Chiropractic adjustments may offer relief from Psoriasis. Subluxation (mis-alignments of the vertebrae of the spine) may cause psoriasis by the effect an impinged nerve or nerves have on the normal blood circulation to the walls of portions of the intestinal tract. Subluxations can adversely affect the nerve supply to the walls of the upper intestinal tract and also the lymph centers and their neural and circulatory connections.

When subluxations break down the normal integrity of nerves that supply the walls of the intestines, over time, that wall will begin to break down at the cellular level. Once the intestinal walls lose their integrity, toxins are permitted to pass through into the lymphatic system and the bloodstream. Then, when the liver and kidneys become overwhelmed, the body diverts the toxins through a secondary eliminatory organ—the skin.

The skin was not designed to eliminate inner toxins on an ongoing basis. While most people’s skin replaces itself about once every 28 days, psoriatic skin tries to regenerate as frequently as every 3 or 4 days. This results in thickened, red patches, silvery scales, peeling, and even bleeding in severe cases. Intense itchiness is a frequent complaint Healing of the intestinal walls is supported and speeded up by increasing the health of the nerve supply. Diet and internal cleansing in combination with restoring normal nerve function through chiropractic adjustments may offer lasting relief for many psoriasis sufferers.

6 Surprising Health Benefits of Massage Therapy

It counteracts all that sitting you do

“Most individuals are dealing with some kind of postural stress,” says Aaron Tanason, registered massage therapist, kinesiologist and owner at Paleolife Massage Therapy in Toronto. “More often than not [that stress] tends to manifest in the shoulders and neck.”

Desk workers, beware. More advanced forms of postural stress “show up as pain or weakness in the low back and gluteals caused by prolonged periods of sitting.”

Luckily, massage can counteract the imbalance caused from sitting, which means you can keep your desk job—as long as you schedule a regular massage.

It eases muscle pain

Got sore muscles? Massage therapy can help. “Massage increases and improves circulation, in much the same way rubbing your elbow when you knock it on a table helps to relieve the pain,” says Tanason.

A 2011 study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, found that massage therapy is as effective as other methods of treatment for chronic back pain.

It soothes anxiety and depression

“Human touch, in a context that is safe, friendly and professional, can be incredibly therapeutic and relaxing,” says Tanason.

Women diagnosed with breast cancer who received massage therapy three times a week reported being less depressed and less angry, according to a 2005 study published in the International Journal of Neuroscience.
And, a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, found that patients who were depressed and anxious were much more relaxed and happy, and had reduced stress levels after massage.

It improves sleep

Not only can massage encourage a restful sleep—it also helps those who can’t otherwise comfortably rest.

“Massage promotes relaxation and sleep in those undergoing chemo or radiation therapy,” says Lisa Marie de Miranda, registered massage therapist and kinesiologist at Paleolife Massage Therapy.

Also, if you’re a new parent, you’ll be happy to know it can help infants sleep more, cry less and be less stressed, according to research from the University of Warwick.

“Most RMTs can do infant massage,” says de Miranda.  And if parents want to do it themselves, it comes naturally. “There’s not really a particular technique. Whatever parents normally do to soothe their baby will be effective.”

It boosts immunity

A 2010 study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that massage boosts patients' white blood cell count (which plays a large role in defending the body from disease).

It also “improves immune function for individuals with HIV,” says de Miranda.

It relieves headaches

Next time a headache hits, try booking a last-minute massage. “Massage decreases frequency and severity of tension headaches,” says de Miranda.

Research from Granada University in Spain found that a single session of massage therapy has an immediate effect on perceived pain in patients with chronic tension headaches.

Give Yourself a Natural Energy Boost

Energy can be a tricky thing – some days you have it, some days you don't. Countless factors can affect your energy levels throughout the day, week to week and even longer term. Fortunately, in the absence of an underlying health condition, there are simple strategies to ensure you've got energy when you need it – which in general, means all the time.

Here are some great natural energy boosters to raise you up when you're feeling low:

1. Stress Less: Easier said than done, right? Stress, particularly chronic stress, may be the No. 1 cause of low energy. Why? Because all your available energy - physical, mental, emotional - is occupied by whatever's got you stressed out - your relationship, your finances, your job, etc. And stress leads to all the other energy drainers mentioned below: poor diet, lack of exercise and sleep issues. The Fix: Yes, "Stress less" is still the solution. Here are some great ways to reduce stress and boost your energy levels in the process.

2. Rethink Your Diet: Many people don't have a clue that what they eat has a direct and dramatic impact on their energy levels. The main culprits: eating too much, eating too much sugar / simple carbohydrates or not eating enough, particularly of the right foods. All three lead to low blood sugar levels, making you feel sluggish and drained. The Fix: Eat less carbs, more protein, and low-GI foods (vegetables included) that give you sustained energy throughout the day. Eat something every 3-4 hours to avoid blood sugar depression.

3. Less Butt, More Feet: This isn't as funny as it sounds; exercise (or lack of it) has a profound impact on energy. Interestingly, while many people (usually non-exercisers) fear exercising because they believe it will expend too much energy, it actually has the opposite effect. The Fix: In the short term, exercise energizes; in the long term, particularly as you drop pounds, tone and tighten, and start to see results, it can be downright motivating. What's more, physical activity increases your metabolism – the body's ability to burn calories at rest. Now that's energy in action.

4. Recharge: Sleep is the mechanism by which the body and mind refresh, recharge and revitalize. Unfortunately, even people who think they're getting enough sleep probably aren't. Watching TV or checking your emails for an hour before bedtime, waking up multiple times, or tossing and turning because of an improper mattress / pillow, sets the stage for disturbed, disrupted and interrupted sleep. Nothing worse for your energy levels than a night of poor sleep. Even worse when it happens night after night. The Fix: Take these steps to ensure you get a good night's sleep every night, and watch your energy levels soar.
