5. Call for Proposals - CIES Higher Education SIG - CIES 2016

Six Decades of Comparative and International Education: Taking Stock and Looking Forward

60th Annual Conference, March 6-10, 2016 Vancouver, B.C.

Dear Members of the CIES Higher Education Special Interest Group,

The 2016 CIES Conference call for proposals is out. The early-bird deadline for proposal submission is September 15, 2015 and the final deadline for all submissions is October 15, 2015.

This year's theme, Six Decades of Comparative and International Education: Taking Stock and Looking Forward, explores how the CIES and the field of Comparative and International Education have evolved over the decades, and where they are (and/or should be) going

The Higher Education SIG (HESIG) promotes the study, research, teaching, and dissemination of knowledge about issues related to higher education theory, policy, and practice. Our HESIG invites all comparative researchers, policymakers, practitioners, representatives of international organizations, local and global non-governmental organizations, and members of the civil society to share their Higher Education insights and experiences and stimulate forward-looking debates. CIES membership is required to present at the CIES 2016 HESIG Program.

HESIG sessions and posters at the CIES Conference will articulate the many questions your proposals will raise, and serve as the SIG’s platform for our 2016 Conference meetings and conversations. The program committee will give preference to individual papers and group panels that cross disciplinary boundaries, involve researchers from different countries and institutions, and connect academic scholarship with practitioners’ work. Of course, all ideas and proposals are welcome. Proposals must comply with CIES submission requirements. We will also ask our HESIG members to help review proposals.

Submission Guidelines are available at: http://www.cies.us/news/225952/CIES-2016-Conference-Call-for-Proposals.htm
Volunteer to review Proposals

If you have any questions, please contact the Program Co-Chairs, Esther E. Gottlieb, at gottlieb.26@osu.edu and Gerardo Blanco Ramírez, at gerardo.blanco@umb.edu

6. Call for Journal Articles - Educational Studies Moscow

The journal Educational Studies Moscow / Вопросы образования is pleased to announce a special issue on the “Recruitment, Education, and Retention of Teachers: Issues and Challenges in the Region.” This issue is guest edited by Gita Steiner-Khamsi, Professor of Comparative and International Education at Columbia University, and Elena Anatolieva Lenskaya, Dean of the Education Management Faculty and Director of the Development Department at the Moscow School of Social and Economic Sciences.

In the 21st century the profession of teaching is becoming more important than ever, as students need to be prepared to contribute to a quickly evolving globalized economy and to live in a world replete with rapidly developing new technologies. Moreover, in the decades since the fall of the USSR, nations in Central and East Europe, the Caucasus region, Central Asia and Mongolia have undergone profound social and political changes, including in many cases educational reform. This calls for an examination of the teaching profession in those areas, what its goals are, and how it may or should develop.

We therefore welcome research on any aspect of recruitment into teaching in the regions named above. Potential topics may include but are not limited to teacher salaries, hiring and retention, teacher education, training and professional development, admissions criteria to teacher education programs, educational policy, infrastructure in school systems, or assessment of curricular and teaching effectiveness.

Please send queries or manuscripts via email to: Ivan Eubanks, Chief Editor of English Issues — ieubanks@nes.ru. Please put “Teacher Recruitment” in the subject line of your message.

To ensure consideration, completed manuscripts should be submitted by October 1, 2015.

All submitted research articles will undergo a double-blind peer review. Other materials will be evaluated for publication by the journal’s Editorial Board. Original work in English is preferred, but work in Russian will be considered. Authors selected for publication will have their work translated and distributed twice—once in English, once in Russian.

Educational Studies Moscow / Вопросы образования is an international, multidisciplinary, peer-reviewed quarterly that has been published by the Russian National Research University, “Higher School of Economics,” for the past ten years. The work of scholars in the social sciences, natural sciences, and humanities is welcome, and research on the history, philosophy, sociology, psychology and economics of education regularly appears in the journal. You may learn more about the journal’s scope and mission at our website: http://vo.hse.ru/en/.

7. Request for Submissions - Teaching Comparative Education SIG

The Teaching Comparative Education SIG (TCE SIG) invites all university faculty and instructors to submit work as part of the Comparative Education Instructional Materials Archive (CEIMA), an ongoing project of the TCE SIG, partially funded by CIES. CEIMA collects and posts comparative and international education instructional materials from universities worldwide on a web-based archive (http://www.ciestcesig.org/ceimahome/) to enhance instructional practice, promote inter-university dialogue, and document the dynamic and evolving nature of the field through its platform and resource sharing. Examples of work collected and posted in CEIMA include descriptions and explanations of in-class activities, paper and presentation assignments, small-scale ethnographic research projects, and other innovative instructional materials along with accompanying course syllabi on comparative and international education topics. To access CEIMA, its collected materials, or submit new materials, please go to the TCE SIG website (http://www.ciestcesig.org/) and click on “CEIMA” in the upper right navigation bar. From that next page, you can access information and materials obtained through CEIMA, or submit your own materials by following the instructions provided in the “Submit Materials” section. Please send any and all questions regarding CEIMA or the Teaching Comparative Education SIG to ciestcesig@gmail.com.

8. Special Issue: Cultural and Academic Adjustment of Refugee Youth in Educational Settings
International Journal of Intercultural Relations

According to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), there are over 10 million refugees spread around the world living in varying conditions including refugee camps, temporary shelters, and permanent resettlement in other countries. The United Nations has specified in conventions, and researchers have concurred, that education is essential for refugee children’s social, psychosocial, and economic adjustment. However, in temporary spaces of refuge access to education is limited and generally of a low quality, with inadequate resources (Dryden-Peterson, 2011). Research suggests that refugee students continue to experience challenges in countries of resettlement (McBrien, 2005), and those with interrupted or no prior formal education are particularly at risk (Dooley, 2009).

The International Journal of Intercultural Relations (IJIR) is soliciting manuscripts for a special issue on the Cultural and Academic Adjustment of Refugee Youth in Educational Settings. The issue is intended to look at challenges and effective practices in various countries of temporary asylum and permanent resettlement of refugee youth. The editors hope to receive submissions that report on empirical work on refugee students at all levels of education: primary, secondary, and higher education; formal, informal, and non-formal (Brock, 2011); and in diverse national contexts.  We welcome methodological approaches that rely on quantitative, qualitative, and/or participatory methods.

IJIR is concerned with intercultural relations, including topics such as acculturation; intercultural communication and interactions, and cultural diversity in educational settings.  Please go to http://www.journals.elsevier.com/international-journal-of-intercultural-relations/ to learn more about the IJIR its Aims and Scope.

9. CANDE SIG Call for Proposals

Dear colleagues:

The CANDE SIG welcomes proposals for the 2016 Annual CIES meeting in Vancouver, B.C. to be held from March 6-10, 2016.  Our SIG welcomes research done using a diverse range of methodologies and conceptual frameworks related to citizenship and democratic education at the school, local, national and international levels.

Colleagues are welcome to submit proposals for individual and group papers and proposals in relation to democratic and citizenship education. In addition to such contributions, we welcome submissions that respond to the theme of this year’s conference: Six Decades of Comparative and International Education: Taking Stock and Looking Forward.  Papers relating to the conference theme might address how the theory, content, processes and measurement of citizenship and democratic education have changed since 1956, when CIES was founded. What would we like to see in the future, and how will we achieve it?

All proposals must be submitted via the CIES 2016 conference website on or before October 15, 2015 (early bird deadline is September 15, 2015). Please make note that the final submission deadline for the 2016 conference is in October rather than in December (as was the case last year).  Submission guidelines are available at: http://www.cies.us/news/225952/CIES-2016-Conference-Call-for-Proposals.htm

Up to five papers/posters will be assigned per SIG panel. Proposals not selected for the CANDE SIG highlighted sessions will be considered for the general pool. CIES membership is required to present and those submitting proposals to CANDE SIG will be asked to participate in the review of one or two submissions. We look forward to receiving your proposals!

14. 2016 CIES Global Mathematics Education SIG Panels

We hope to see all of you at CIES in Vancouver, B.C. next March. We are contacting you to invite you to participate in the Global Mathematics Education SIG panels. We are planning a number of exciting events for the conference. If you are interested in participating in any of these panels, please send us an email at Global Mathematics SIG globalmathcies@gmail.com by Monday, August 3rd. Abstracts for the accepted ideas will be due on September 4. Please be sure to indicate which panel you are targeting.

Highlighted SIG Panel
We are sending out this call for papers to invite you to send in your interest to be on our highlighted Global Mathematics Education SIG panel. The topic will be: Policy Uses of Mathematics Assessment. This highlighted SIG panel is intended to align with the overall conference theme, “Six Decades of Comparative and International Education: Taking Stock and Looking Forward.” We anticipate that this highlighted panel might focus on research and theory in mathematics education at the elementary level that pertains to policy uses of mathematics assessment, such as:
  • Changes in the use of mathematics assessment at the policy level over time - Papers might include: How has the use of mathematics assessment changed over the past ten/twenty/thirty years? What are the paths through which mathematics assessments are initiated, implemented, and used? How have formative and summative mathematics assessments been used by policymakers?
  • Current trends in the use of mathematics assessment at the policy level – Papers might include: How is research informing mathematics assessment and its use at the policy level? How is theory informing mathematics assessment and its use at the policy level? What are the current trends in mathematics assessment?
  • The future of mathematics assessment at the policy level – Papers might include: Where do we want to be in mathematics assessment in the future? What do we need to know about mathematics assessments to inform future policy?

Other Global Mathematics SIG Panels
We intend to organize two other panels around the suggested themes below.

Title:  Innovative Approaches to Teaching Mathematics
Description of panel: This panel will showcase innovative approaches to improving mathematics education in low income and low resource environments, focusing both on teachers’ knowledge and practices, and classroom instructional approaches.  Taking into consideration the conference theme on “Taking Stock, and Moving Forward,” we are looking for papers on evidence-based approaches that inform our understanding of what has worked in the field and what has not, and what innovative approaches we should take forward.  Broadly, we are looking for papers on approaches that have shown promise for positively impacting instructional leaders to effectively support mathematics teaching and learning.
Here are some guiding questions for papers:
  • What innovative techniques focus on conceptual learning and support so that teachers understand mathematics better and have the capacity and confidence to teach mathematics more effectively?
  • What research and experience informs the development of processes for working with local ministries and educators to develop curriculum and materials?
  • What innovative teaching models use low-cost materials to support the development of mathematical proficiency for students?  What research exists on such materials?
  • What technologies exist to teach mathematics in low-cost and low-resource environments?

Title:  The Role of Language in Mathematics Instruction
Description of panel: The papers on this panel will focus on the use of language in mathematics teaching and learning in multi-lingual environments. Papers may be of two types: theory on the role of language in instruction, student learning, curriculum development, and/or teacher preparation, or empirical research on how language is used in classrooms, curriculum development and/or teacher preparation. In particular, we are looking for papers that highlight issues around language of instruction, considering questions such as:
  • What evidence is there for selecting a Language of Instruction for mathematics in multi-lingual societies?
  • What issues do students learning mathematics in a second language face, and how can those students be best supported?
  • How do curriculum materials support or not support teaching and learning in a second language?
  • What difficulties are faced in mathematics learning when students switch from the Mother Tongue to a second language as Language of Instruction?
  • What is, and what should be, the role of code-switching in mathematics teaching and learning in multi-lingual societies?

15. Call for Proposals: Contemplative Inquiry and Holistic Education SIG

We are reaching out to you to enthusiastically urge you to submit a proposal to the Contemplative Inquiry and Holistic Education SIG (CIHE) for the CIES 2016 conference in Vancouver.
Current educational systems have ignored or marginalized many great educational practices that would enable learners to develop not only intellectually but also emotionally, morally, ecologically and spiritually. The Contemplative Inquiry and Holistic Education SIG aims to explore the development and integration of learners’ mind, body, and spirit through holistic means. Like teaching, learning is a holistic endeavor that is most powerful when multiple aspects of the human being – cognitive, emotional, intuitive, physical, social, spiritual, and ethical – work together.

We welcome proposals that attempt to:
  • Examine contemplative inquiry as a practical tool and, more importantly, a deep philosophical, spiritual, and educational approach to lead students, teachers, and researchers to a greater understanding of humanity’s oneness;
  • Examine innovative pedagogies for inner growth and development through right-brained approaches, such as meditation, qigong, tai chi, yoga, movement, music, dance, storytelling, the visual arts, and reflective writing (e.g., diaries, journals, essays, and poetry), combined with left-brained approaches, instead of merely focusing on the left-brained pedagogical practices that often dominate due to the global emphasis on standardized testing;
  • Study the use of creative forms of holistic education that encourage learners to become engaged in society and become a transformative force;
  • Discuss and cultivate contemplative and holistic research methods/methodologies;
  • Study and compare educational systems in different parts of the world in terms of how well and how often they engage learners in holistic learning.

The SIG is genuinely interested in your proposals. Strongly we invite you to join our SIG to be an educator, researcher and practitioner in an emerging, frontier field of education.
