Information for Africa holiday enthusiasts

We recommend you view this email in your browser

Welcome to our quarterly newsletter. As always, lots of magical things have been happening in the wonderful and unique areas of Africa.  Happy travellers are returning with the ''African bug'' and have experienced life changing holidays.  Zimbabwe is our featured destination this quarter as it offers a great value safari experience.  There has been a lot of media coverage worldwide about the very sad death of Cecil the lion who was killed by a hunter just outside of Hwange National Park. We hope that the widespread news helps raise awareness of the imperative need to conserve our most precious and unique wildlife. Wishing you the best for the months ahead, warm regards, Alex and Tammy

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is top favourite for safari goers at the moment.  Whilst the destination went through some tough times, their National Parks remained protected thanks to the passion and commitment of all facets related to preserving wildlife. Tourism is now well and truly back!

The country is home to superb National Parks with great wildlife viewing, striking scenery, a variety of habitats from granite hills to the mighty Zambezi River, and one of the 7 spectacular natural wonders of the world Victoria Falls - it's a complete safari holiday destination. The warmth and hospitality of Zimbabweans with their enthusiasm to please you makes your African stay unforgettable. Travelling on safari to Zimbabwe is safe, the areas are protected and the professional guides of Zimbabwe are classed as some of the best in the industry.

It's for these reasons that Zimbabwe is our highlighted destination and we are excited to be returning for a visit  towards the end of the year, and again early next year with our group departures (contact us for more details).

Unique moments on safari

Our favourite image of something completely different - feet-in-the-water sundowner...magic!

Did you know..? Giraffe (Giraffa Camelopardalis)

When a giraffe is born it drops six feet to the ground but can manage to stand up just five minutes later.
Giraffe move both legs on the one side almost at the same time and can gallop up to 56km/h. Males can reach a height of up to 5.8m from the ground. Females often feed lower by bending their necks, this can be one of the ways in determining the sex of a giraffe from a distance. The tops of the male 'horns' (ossicones)  are bald whereas females have tuffs of hair. Their long necks have the same amount of vertebrate (7) as a human’s neck. The neck contains special blood valves to stop the giraffe from blacking out when it bends over to drink water. The nine subspecies are distinguished by their coat patterns and the collective term is a journey of giraffe.

Hwange National Park (1.4 million hectares) is Zimbabwe's largest National Park.  Hwange is renowned for great elephant, buffalo and sable herds.  Other wildlife sightings include predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah, spotted hyena and wild dogs.  Roan and eland are special to the area, and one can be surprised with other delights such as giraffe, zebra and wildebeest. A great variety of vegetation and scenery allows for a diverse experience.

Sundowner (suhn-dou-ner)  - ''an alcoholic drink taken after completing the day's work, usually at sundown''

The safari tradition of a sundowner has to be one of the highlights of the day!  Most often the quintessential G&T is the favourite but the safari operators will pack anything besides the ‘kitchen sink”  for your sundowner choice! It is much more than simply stopping for a quick drink, it is the sharing of the days stories, looking at tracks, watching animals in the distance, reliving experiences, absorbing the peace of the surroundings, witnessing the end of the day and the night unfold whilst watching the magnificent sun set over the African bush.

Thanks to Chrissie and Will from NSW Australia for this lovely picture of the elusive Pels Fishing Owl, seen right in camp at Jacana in the Okavango Delta and their lovely comments.....

"The contrasting mix of Jacana and Kalahari was perfect.  The imparting of knowledge and care from the guides, the excellent camp staff, trimmings and food were great.  Tammy's professionalism added to the whole experience''

We're delighted you had a great trip!
