Business of Art Workshop

Thank you to all of our members who attended the Business of Art Workshop and helped make this event a success! We had a great day of entertaining and informative presentations that related to different elements of the art world, from social media marketing to gallery protocol. We look forward to hosting more workshops in the future that address the needs of our diverse member base.

We would also like to give a BIG thank you to our very knowledgeable presenters: Carolyn Yardley, Nancy Slaght, Phyllis Serota, Mark Heine, Robyn Quinn, Yvonne Owens, Rochelle Grayson and Geoff Meridith.
Gorge on Art

Throughout the day, we saw a wide range of art, including photographs, paintings, sculptures, ceramics, metal works and even jewelry. We also enjoyed musical performances and sampled a delicious variety of treats.

The CACGV was tent was alive with a children's puppet making table, Giant Puppets and performances in anticipation for our Puppets for Peace Festival coming this September 11 - 13.

Collaborative Consciousness

Group Art Exhibition and Artists' Collective
with Peter Van Giesen, Emma Kelly,
Elley Li, Shoni Robertson, Robert Roy and Rhonda Usipiuk

July 15th - August 14th
Opening Reception: Friday, August 17th 5:00-8:00pm
Bay Center (1150 Douglas Street) - 3rd floor beside Club Monaco

Emma Kelly
Emma is an English-born artist working and residing in Victoria BC. An avid amateur photographer from an early age and without a camera when homeless in 2012, she discovered drawing as a means to capture her surroundings and the people she met. Her focus is photography, drawing and mixed media pieces which explore her interests in addiction, travel and older people. She studies part-time at the Vancouver Island School of Art and is currently planning further research and art work with food, in addition to ongoing print and photography projects.

Shoni Robertson
Shoni Robertson is an island girl who has been creating art since she was a kid. She is especially attracted to movement and colour which is reflected in her pieces. Celebration of the land and ocean is her focus, and love.
Rhonda Lee
Rhonda Lee is a Victoria-based artist interested in visual culture and communication, and in particular, contemporary art. In her recent series, Summer Drift, Rhonda Lee focuses on the intimate and multi-faceted relationship between landscape, memory, and summer ritual.
Peter Van Giesen
Painting is –for me– a mystical process whereby the veil of illusory fragmentation is momentarily lifted to discover the underlying immaterial essence of the universe. I am drawn to places of mystery where I find solace in the power of the Spirit. My art is the result of sporadic surges of energy that percolate to the surface of my consciousness.
Elley Li
Elley was raised on by the Chinese Philosophy and has experienced Japanese culture. She now lives in the natural beauty of Victoria, BC, Canada. East meets West in both her life and in her art to create a unique mixed-media experience that combines three cultures to celebrate the simplicity of the nature.

Elley believes light enlightens life, therefore light and colour are the most important tools to show the beauty of nature and human in her art works.
Robert Roy
Robert E Roy is a long-time resident of Victoria ,BC, Canada. He paints mainly in acrylics and at times will work with additional fibers and materials to enhance the piece he is creating. His work has hung in designer galleries, cafes and personal shows. He has had paintings in past juried art shows such as the Sooke Fine Art Show and Sidney Fine Art Shows.

Call to Artists: Create Public Art for Two City Parkades

Artists and artist teams are invited to submit an Expression of Interest to enter a local, juried competition to create new public artwork to beautify and enhance the Bastion Square Parkade or Centennial Square Parkade stairwells. The call is open to artists who are residents of the Capital Region. Enhancing City parkades to make them more welcoming was identified last spring as a way to improve the parking experience downtown.

The Bastion Square Parkade public art will be featured at the rear, six-floor stairwell that connects to Bastion Square. The Centennial Square Parkade artwork will be installed in its four-storey glassed stairwell, which can be viewed from the public space below.

While the Bastion Square Parkade public art competition calls for an artist or an artist team to create the artwork, the Centennial Square Parkade public art competition calls for artist(s) to collaborate with a team of 3 - 5 youth, ranging from 14 - 24 years of age, to design and produce the artwork. The Victoria Youth Council will assist in selecting youth participants for the project.

A range of media may be considered, including but not limited to, two-dimensional images including painting, multimedia, collage, photography, prints, and graphic design applications. Sustainable design, procurement, and fabrication practices are encouraged, and safe access to the parkade must be maintained.

The budget for the completed artworks is up to $10,000 for each parkade, which must cover all design, production, installation and administrative costs. The new artworks are to be installed by December 31, 2015 and will be funded by the City’s Art in Public Places Reserve Fund.

The public art competitions will be juried by a selection committee of arts professionals, community members, and City of Victoria representatives. Artists will need to submit a resume, visual documentation of their previous work, a concept for the site with renderings, and a summary of the role students will play in creating the artwork, if applicable.

Winners will be announced in August. Celebratory unveiling ceremonies will be held in early 2016.

Expressions of Interest can be submitted electronically to culture@victoria.ca or by mail. The deadline for submissions is Monday, July 27, 2015 at 4:30 p.m.

For more information, visit: www.victoria.ca/publicart

Call for Entries Open for the 2016 Victoria Film Festival

The submissions are now open for the 2016 Victoria Film Festival (VFF), taking place February 5 – 14, 2016. VFF will be celebrating it’s 22nd year, while further expanding its film selection to now include an experimental category and the return of the popular ConVerge program from previous years.

“It’s an exciting year, because for the first time, we have dropped the entry fees for youth and experimental films. We are encouraging young and dynamic filmmakers to submit, now more than ever before,” said Donovan Aikman, Victoria Film Festival Programmer.  ConVerge is the young filmmakers program which encourages filmmakers between the ages of 6 to 24 to submit their short film–up to 30 minutes in length– free of charge. Films selected to be part of the ConVerge program will be screened at non-traditional venues around Victoria.  The experimental category requires film submissions to be outside the range of traditional narrative, documentary or animated films but can still contain aspects of the styles.

The $20 early bird rate is available until July 9th, while the $40 regular submission ends August 7th. The late submissions deadline is September 11, and all entries must be received by September 25, 2015. Discounts available for submitting online.
To submit your film and for more information, visit the Victoria Film Festival website.
