A passion for permanent pasture
David Crespo, a farmer from Portugal, believes that permanent pasture is an “outstanding resource” which can significantly improve animal production. But the usual grasses grown require inputs and lack protein for the animals. He has developed a system of integrating legumes in the pasture which means he has not used fertiliser on his grasslands for 35 years. Read on.

Web platform generates higher income for producers
Direct purchase of agricultural products from farmers in order to improve freshness and quality is being increasingly demanded by the international fruit trade. So the Spanish internet portal naranjasyfrutas.com was set up in order to deal with this demand. Read how they did it here.

The call for applications for three new EIP-AGRI Focus Groups is open. Do you have practical experience on any of the following topics and would like to share this with 19 other experts, to identify promising and inspiring ideas for innovation? Please apply before 7 September 2015.
The topics to be covered by the three new Focus Groups are:
- Mixed farming systems: livestock/cash crops
- Benchmarking of farm productivity and sustainability performance
- Reducing emissions from cattle farming

Building new sustainable value chains based on agricultural and forestry biomass
The EIP-AGRI Workshop held in Sardinia on 27 and 28 May 2015 focused on building new low-carbon, resource-efficient and sustainable value chains based on agricultural and forestry biomass. This workshop identified concrete solutions and tools to be implemented by stakeholders at regional, national and European levels to improve the cooperation between primary sector and industry. New Spanish hub for innovation in agriculture and forestry
The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment has recently launched IDi-A, a new web portal to provide information on supply and demand for innovation and research in the agricultural and forestry sectors. It provides a simple search of the most relevant calls for EU and national funding to encourage Research and development and innovation, targeted to farmers, foresters, industry and other stakeholders in the agri-food and forestry sectors.

AgriSPIN identifies best practice for innovation brokering and support systems
What makes an innovation process move forward? And what stops it? The EU-project “AgriSPIN – Space for Innovations in Agriculture” seeks to find answers to those questions and many more by identifying best practices for innovation brokering and support systems in European agriculture. AgriSPIN is a thematic network and is funded under the EU research framework Horizon 2020, bringing together innovation experts for helping innovation support services with practical advice for their daily work. New horizons in crop fertilisation
EU-funded researchers have developed an automated prototype to help farmers monitor and control the amount of water and fertiliser they need for their crops. It has already been successfully tested on 25 hectares of land (an area roughly the size of 35 football pitches), and the SMEs involved are making commercialisation plans – there is currently no such system on the market.
