Buhari and Obama can end Polio in Africa

For every one of the almost 70 years I have lived in Nigeria, children – often by the hundreds – have become paralyzed from a virus that I’ve spent my professional life trying to stop. But this year may be different. Since July 24, 2014, one year ago this week, Nigeria has not recorded a single case of wild poliovirus. This is the first time this has happened in history. If Nigeria is able to stay on track, it can be removed from the short list of countries that have never halted polio transmission.

In Lagos: Psychiatric hospital health workers suspend 7-week strike

Health workers at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos, on Thursday suspended their seven-week-old strike to give room for further dialogue with the hospital's management. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondents who visited the hospital report that the workers, including nurses, pharmacists and record officers, were seen on duty, though doctors remained on strike.

NAFDAC DG, Orhii, is corrupt - Ex-finance Director 

National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has been rocked by a crisis which has taken another twist as the redeployed former Finance Director, Ademola Mogbojuri, has accused the NAFDAC’s Director-General, Dr. Paul Orhii, of massive corruption. Mogbojuri accused Orhii of financial recklessness, saying he has evidences of inappropriate financial transactions involving the DG.

NAFDAC DG Absolves Self of Corruption Charges 

The Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Dr. Paul Orhii, on Wednesday absolved himself of  the corruption allegations levelled against him by a former Director of Finance in the agency, Ademola Mogbojuri. The allegations came amid wrangling between Orhii and Mogbojuri. Orhii, while speaking with journalists on the crisis, explained that throughout his records, he has led the agency in a transparent manner, and followed due process in awarding contracts.

'Nigeria's health sector worse than those of war-torn nations' 

WITH less than six months to the end of the deadline for attainment of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and two months to the launch of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Nigeria still has one of the worst health indices and far worse than worn-torn countries like Liberia. Reasons: The Guardian investigation has shown that since the Abuja Declaration in 2001 Nigeria has never spent more than eight per cent of its annual national budget on health. In fact, the country has been spending an average of six per cent of its budget on health in the last six years.
