As our website's Refuge Notes said, most nesting birds abandoned the rookery at Seahorse Key this spring. The story was reported by the Cedar Key News and the Gainesville Sun. Associated Press reporter Jason Dearon interviewed Vic Doig and Larry Woodward at the Refuge. The AP placed the story. Subsequently it has been featured in many print and digital media. The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC had a 4-minute piece about it. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation did a 6-minute on-air interview with Vic.The Friends website - Homepage has links to many of the media stories.

Although the mystery intrigues all of us, the event also highlights:
  • The importance of preserving habitat on islands throughout the Cedar Key Refuge as a hedge against a disaster on one of them
  • The value of monitoring and studying refuge wildlife over decades, as the Refuge  and Marine Lab have done on Seahorse Key, so that managers and policy makers have hard data to make practical decisions in a crisis.
  • The Refuges, and the Refuge managers and staff, play an important role in our communities. The continuing loss of staff positions from our Refuges means we are losing crucial core leadership for Dixie, Levy, and Gilchrist Counties, and the whole Big Bend region.
