Niwot News - July 16, 2015

Oh, it's hot. And then rainy. And hot.

...and my lawn is drying out because I don't want to scare this fledgling hawk away with the sprinklers, but since this is a publication of the Niwot Business Association - now 141 businesses strong, people! - let's talk about what's going on in that glorious and booming slice of the world.

First off, the official ground-breaking of the Niwot Children's Park was really lovely on Saturday. Construction of Phase 1 is scheduled to start very soon - maybe as early as next week. You can learn the history of the project, see the plans, and donate to the fundraising campaign at niwotchildrenspark.com. Way to go, Niwot Cultural Arts Association and the Park building committee!

HMK Jewelers is now open on the main level of the Lockwood building, across the street from Colterra. This is owner Dennis Perez's first jewelry store, so drop by, check out the beautiful displays, and show them some Niwot love.

Less than a month away, Jazz on 2nd Ave will return this year for its 5th fabulous festival August 13-15 right downtown on - you guessed it - Second Avenue(!) in front of Treppeda's Italian Bistro. This is an amazing event with a seriously world-class lineup, so mark your calendar, check the 3-day schedule, and contact them to learn how to become a sponsor,  volunteer, or vendor. More than 6,000 people attended this event last year (and there's only 4,000 in town), so if you haven't been, let's make it happen shall we? It's kind of a big deal.

Tonight at Rock & Rails free summer concert we have groove master Regi "The Teacha" Wooten headlining the evening at Whistle Stop Park from 5-9pm.
See the full schedule of Thursday night concerts and come early for happy hour specials from 5-6pm.  Nalani opens the show at 5; Regi goes on at 6:30.

There's lots more live music & more going on all weekend long in Niwot:
7/16: Rock & Rails free summer concert at Whistlestop Park from 5-9pm.
7/17: Steepland String band plays Powder Keg Brewing
7/18: Stone Soup (funky blues & soul) plays

7/18: Scott Martin on piano at Treppeda's.
7/18: Strangebyrds play Powder Keg Brewing
7/19: Irish Session, Powder Keg Brewing

Check their website calendars for times & details, and have a great week!

4th of July Wrap-Up     Remember that fantastic pancake breakfast you had at the Niwot Market before the 4th of July Parade? The pancake breakfast is always a fundraiser generously hosted by the Market, but other than covering the cost of the food, all of the proceeds are donated to a local organization. This year the Niwot Community Association was the beneficiary of a record-setting year -- $2,100 in proceeds!

A big THANK YOU to Bert Steele and his team at the Market for their perennial support of this event and so many others. Niwot is a better place because of you.

Summer Pet Safety Tips from Left Hand Animal Hospital

  1. Cover the basics. Make sure your pets have up to date tags before they head outdoors. Use a leash to keep dogs close to you to avoid dangers on the trails. Keep pets' vaccines up to date. Discuss flea and tick control with your veterinarian if you have any concerns.

  2. Be wary around water.  Not all dogs are natural swimmers, so watch your pet when you are around the pool, beach, lake, or river. Watch those currents! Even a great swimmer is no match for an undertow.

  3. Keep cool.  Schedule walks early or late in the day to avoid the heat. Plan walks to include shade stops and bring water for you and your pet to stay hydrated. Consider that some long coated cats and dogs prefer to be shaved to stay cooler.

  4. Watch for overheating. Pets can develop heat stroke, just like people. Watch for excessive panting, red eyes, drooling, and balance problems. If you see these, seek a veterinarian immediately, and get your pet to a cooler location.

  5. Party like a (safe) animal. Be wary of what your pets can get at the family picnic or neighborhood barbecue. Onions, chocolate, and raisins are toxic, and alcohol is a no-no for pets.

Have a fun summer!

A friendly reminder to our customers that Clean Conscience is hosting a clothing drive to benefit the Humane Society of Boulder Valley! Clean out your closets and get rid of all the clothes that you never wear, that don't fit, and that take up extra space. All donations will go to the HSBV's Thrift and Gift Shop and proceeds will support our mission of saving animal's lives. Donations of gently used clothing, shoes, and jackets are all welcome. The clothing drive runs from June 10th through July 31st and donating is easy. Gather up all your clean, gently used clothing items into a bag. The Clean Conscience technicians will pick them up on your next scheduled cleaning date and deliver them directly to HSBV. If you prefer, you can also drop off items at our office, located at 4715 Broadway, Unit C-6 in Boulder.  303-495-2444
