OVRS Quick Tip: Areas of Interest
When searching for a role on Volunteer MBC’s Online Volunteer Referral System (OVRS) using the “Areas of Interest†feature is a great way to find exactly what you are looking for.
Member community service organizations of Volunteer MBC appreciate your contributions. To help ensure that they recruit the ideal volunteer for their positions, all roles in the OVRS are assigned specific “Areas of Interest.â€
For volunteers, this list can be found when logging in to our system through your client profile form under the tab that reads “Additional Information†shown here:
This list can also be found on the home page of the OVRS, shown here:
When organizations post their volunteer roles on-line with us, they assign specific “Areas of Interest†to each of their roles. When the “Areas of Interest†that you have selected in your on-line profile match the interests indicated in a volunteer role, by setting up the notifications service in the OVRS, you can receive updates by email of suggested roles.
To help you in your search for a volunteer role, simply log-in to your profile (or create a profile), and select a minimum of three “Areas of Interests†that best describe what you are looking for. To begin your search, go to - http://bit.ly/vmbc_ToVolunteer
For questions or assistance in searching for volunteer roles in our OVRS, please contact us at 2volunteer@volunteermbc.org.

Featured Article: A new era of volunteer recognition that just might get you a job
(Source: Hilborn – www.charityinfo.ca)
The role of volunteer experience is especially critical for those trying to break into the workforce, such as newcomers who require Canadian experience or youth with little, if any, work history.
Thanks to a new era of skills-based volunteer recognition dawning in Ontario organizations can now attract more people to volunteer to help them seek employment because with the newly launched PREB Ontario system volunteers will have a credible, skills-based certificate they can present that highlights their skills with language that is meaningful to employers. This certificate can also make volunteering a more enticing option for youth who are looking to make a stronger case for admission into post-secondary education or training programs, or when applying for bursaries and scholarships.
Volunteers across the province can now earn PREB certificates that outline their experience including the tasks performed and the skills demonstrated. This documentation assists people who are interested in turning their volunteer work into paid employment.
Youth, newcomers to Canada and people making career changes are among those expected to benefit most.
Voluntary organizations now have a new tool to attract volunteers, and at the same time, business and education officials have gained a clear, consistent means to assess a candidate’s volunteer experience.
What prompted the provincial government’s investment in the voluntary sector was the coming Pan Am / Parapan Am Games in Toronto that is expected to be powered by approximately 23,000 volunteers. It’s anticipated that many of those volunteers will be interested in using their games volunteer experience as a type of reference for post-games opportunities.
Taking this need into account, it made sense to present the volunteers with PREB certificates. As a legacy of the games, an upgraded PREB system will then be developed for continued use by organizations across Ontario.

More information about the availability of PREB certificates through Volunteer MBC and our member community service organizations is coming soon...stay tuned!

Team Spotlight:
Shilpa Kapadia
Administrative Assistant
I grew up in India and have worked mainly in the private sector. Early on in my career I was a Sales Manager for an export house in India travelling extensively through North America and Europe. The travelling, needless to say, was very exciting and a fabulous opportunity to discover places, try out various cuisines and just soak in architecture and history.
Most of my volunteering experience has been in India, a diverse country where poverty and immense wealth exist side-by-side. My grandfather was on the Board of a non-profit organization that ran an orphanage and worked towards sponsoring the education of underprivileged children from the slums of Mumbai.
Community service was something that was strongly encouraged by the family. Attending and helping out at annual performances that the children would coordinate and visiting the municipal schools that they studied in became a regular practice for me. I was drawn towards social work and began to actively participate as a Secretary of the organization.
When I moved to Canada in 2010, it was logical to start volunteering within the community that my family was integrating into. I began volunteering with an older adult center for a few months before I came across an opportunity with Volunteer MBC to work with their Referral team and to help the centre with coordinating outreach activities.
I find the centre to be one that is dynamic, constantly growing and that serves as a breeding ground for ideas to continuously serve the community in a better way. The scope of work is varied and I have had the privilege to interact with many interesting people and to learn from their diverse perspectives and experiences.
My life has been impacted in different ways by my work with non-profit organizations and I am pleased to say that my participation in Volunteer MBC is a fulfilling and positive experience each day. I was fortunate to be offered an administrative position with them when the opportunity presented itself, and I have not looked back since!
