Join us for a reception in San Francisco on August 29, 2015 at the UCSF Mission Bay Conference Center to celebrate 50 years of exchange with Hong Kong and the United Kingdom. The event will feature guest speaker Ambassador (ret.) Barbara K. Bodine, UCEAP and CUHK participant in Hong Kong 1968-69.

Join us for a reunion trip from October 10-17, 2015

UCEAP is excited to announce a reunion trip in celebration of our 50th anniversary of student exchange with the UK.
A week of festivities in Edinburgh and London has been planned, and will commence in Edinburgh with a special dinner on Saturday, October 10, with current UC students, featuring traditional Scottish music and dancing.
Additional events in Edinburgh include a tour of the Scottish Parliament, a visit to the University of Edinburgh and a welcome reception and tour of University of St. Andrews.

Travel to London and join us at the British Museum for a special tea with current UC students or a behind the scenes visit to our Sotheby’s program. A special academic panel discussion, “United Kingdom and University of California - 50 years of special relationship and reflections on the changing nature of higher education in California and the UK” will be hosted at King’s College. The celebration concludes with a 50th Anniversary dinner to honor UCEAP alumni, friends and 22 current UK partners.

Linda Duttenhaver Distinguished Alumni Award
|
|
UCEAP is pleased to announce that Dr. Kathryn D. Sullivan, Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and NOAA Administrator, accepted the 2015 Linda Duttenhaver Distinguished Alumni Award in May. The award salutes the accomplishments of alumni who have demonstrated a record of service and extraordinary achievement in a particular discipline or organization.
Dr. Sullivan spent the 1971-72 academic year at the University of Bergen in Norway while she was a student at UC Santa Cruz. She went on to complete her doctorate in geology at Dalhousie University in Canada. Dr. Sullivan was one of the first six women selected to join the NASA astronaut corps in 1978 and holds the distinction of being the first American woman to walk in space. She flew on three shuttle missions during her 15-year tenure, including the mission that deployed the Hubble Space Telescope.
An accomplished oceanographer, she was appointed NOAA’s Chief Scientist in 1993, where she oversaw a research and technology portfolio that included fisheries biology, climate change, satellite instrumentation and marine biodiversity. She served for a decade as President and CEO of the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) in Columbus, Ohio, one of the nation's leading science museums. Later, she was the inaugural Director of the Battelle Center for Mathematics and Science Education Policy in the John Glenn School of Public Affairs at Ohio State University.

UCEAP Emerging Leader Award
|
|
In June, UCEAP alumna Jessica Price Petrilli accepted the UCEAP Emerging Leader Award. This award recognizes an outstanding UCEAP alumnus or alumna who has graduated within the past 15 years and has a record of extraordinary service and achievement. She has been a passionate urban school educator for the past 9 years.
Ms. Petrilli spent the 2004-05 academic year at Complutense University in Madrid, Spain while attending UC Santa Barbara. After graduating, she joined Teach for America in 2006, where she began teaching English at Richmond High School in Richmond, CA.

She continued teaching at the same school for 6 years. During her last year of teaching, she attended UC Berkeley’s Principals Leadership Institute, where she earned a master’s degree in education and her administrative credential. The next year Ms. Petrilli became an administrator at the neighboring Helms Middle School, and now, in her third year at that school, she is ending her first year as principal.
She says of her work, “Teaching and leading in a high need school like Richmond High and Helms Middle School is my passion. I believe that education is the key to freedom, so I take the responsibility to provide an excellent education for our students very seriously. As a first generation college student myself, I live and breathe the belief that through education you are free to discover who you are and what potential is waiting to be fulfilled. I am committed to staying in public education, and will continue serving the communities of Richmond and San Pablo through my work as a school leader.”

A UCSC Alumna Remembers: Leningrad, Winter '79

To begin: it was seriously, remarkably, unsustainably, COLD. It didn’t help that the Russians themselves told me it was one of the coldest winters since Napoleon’s armies were frozen outside of Moscow, that they said it was perhaps the coldest winter since the 900 day siege of Leningrad during WWII. Climbing Mont Blanc, a View from UC Irvine

Edward Kim, recent UCI alumnus and University of Lyon participant, attempted to summit Mont Blanc (French side of the Alps) and managed to plant the UCI flag as far up as he could go.
"I decided to take my last year abroad, it seemed like a romantic notion, and I'm an International Studies major, with a focus on Europe and Global Security. Studying abroad was important, as it challenged me, presented me with new perspectives and dispelled lingering unconscious stereotypes about foreign cultures. It was also extremely beneficial for my French, which as one of the official languages of the UN and a widely spoken language in the developing world, will be an excellent third language to add to my resume. Going abroad was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I love hiking, exploring unfamiliar places and traveling, and my study abroad program has let me do all three!"
