Friends' Library Fair
Saturday, August 8: 10am-3pm

Again this year, the Library Fair will be held on the Library grounds. Books are the foundation of the event and at this Library Fair they are displayed on tables, sorted according to topics and surrounded by activity. There is music.  There are vendors. There is food. People come to be serious about their book selections, to meet their friends and neighbors, to be entertained and entertaining.

If you are interested in volunteering to work at the Library Fair this year, contact Lynn Carter at jlobdell000@centurytel.net

Summer Reading Program 2015

June 18—August 15

Kids from preschool through 6th grade can sign up at the Orcas Public Library for the Summer Reading Program.  Kids earn “library dollars” for the books read, and those “dollars” can be used to buy books from our Summer Reading Program bookshop.

Sign-up at the Library.

Readers walked with us in the 4th of July parade behind the Summer Reading Program banner.  The first 25 kids who showed up on parade day to walk with us got a free Summer Reading Program t-shirt.

Come to the Library or contact Nita Couchman, Children’s Librarian, at 376-4985, to learn about other special summer programs or for more information about the program.

The Summer Reading Program is made possible by The Friends of Orcas Island Library.

Welcome Message

from Phil Heikkinen,
Library Director

We're excited about seeing so many visitors and part-time residents back in the Library. Also, we're seeing a lot of our previous young regulars here, back to Orcas Island while on break from college.

Last month, I mentioned that we were exploring new options for online language learning, and am happy to share that we have started a subscription to Pronunciator, which has a lot of great features. Follow the link on our database page:
http://orcaslibrary.org/databases.html. On the same page, look for our new subscription to Birds of North America, generously sponsored by the San Juan Islands Audubon Society.

Last but certainly not least, I am happy to share that our building expansion project, Books and Beyond: the Next Chapter, has really taken flight! The Friends of the Library received a generous bequest from Bob Henigson through the Robert and Phyllis Henigson Trust of over $1 million; and we recently received a $1.4 million capital allocation from the State capital budget through the leadership of our District 40 Senator, Kevin Ranker. This means we really have a project!!

Needless to say, much more news will be coming on this soon.

Visit our website at www.orcaslibrary.org, and be sure to contact me by phone or email (pheikkinen@orcaslibrary.org) to share your thoughts about the expansion project, or about the Library in general.
