The City of Boise Purchases Former James Castle Home

Boise, ID-- The City of Boise is proud to announce the purchase of property located at 5015 Eugene Street, the former home of noted artist James Castle.

James Castle, 1899-1977, is Idaho’s most well-known visual artist. Most accounts acknowledge that Castle was born deaf and presumably never learned much language; he thus turned his constant production of drawn images into his primary mode of communication. Castle's artworks were created almost exclusively with found materials, such as papers salvaged from common packaging, mail, and food containers.

Castle’s works have been collected by many notable individuals and exhibited at major institutions throughout the world, including the Boise Art Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Venice Biennale, the American Folk Art Museum in New York City, INTUIT in Chicago, and the American Art Museum at the Smithsonian among others. Boise State University also holds a collection of Castle’s work.

When completed, the James Castle Home Site will preserve the Castle family home, outbuildings, and landscape where James Castle lived and worked. Programing will include permanent and temporary exhibitions, an Artist-in-Residence program, and other engagement and educational opportunities. The James Castle Home Site will be the only site open to the public that commemorates the life of an artist in Idaho.

Being the most livable city in the country includes preserving and protecting our cultural heritage. The City of Boise’s Department of Arts & History is committed to caring for and providing access to the City’s historical and cultural assets. The James Castle Home Site will be a place-based, community-driven, fully-accessible center, celebrating James Castle and incubating future generations of artists living in Boise, Idaho.
