Beach Art

Campus Composter
"The Rocket," a 13-foot-long composter, has been delivered to SMCC. The machine was paid for with a grant and will be used by horticulure and culinary arts students to create compost out of food waste.

Peaks to Portland Swim
For the second straight year, SMCC President Cantor swam in the 2.4-mile Peaks to Portland swim on July 18. Also swimming were MySuccess coach Maggie Loeffelholz and retired Horticulture Department chairman Rick Churchill.

Interim Academic Dean
Marine Science Professor Chuck Gregory has been named interim Dean of Academics, replacing longtime Academic Dean Janet Sortor, who is moving on to the Maine Community College System.

Au Revoir
We offer congratulations and a big thank you to Janet Sortor, SMCC's longtime Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs. She is leaving SMCC to become Chief Academic Officer with the Maine Community College System.

Remembering Rudy
SMCC's beloved campus cat, Rudy, died of apparent natural causes during the first week of August. Our condolences go out to Prof. Kevin Sweeney, who owned Rudy, and to the entire SMCC community.

Compositing Initiative
You'll soon find green totes in the dining hall and cafe to collect organic materials. The composing company We Compost It! will pick up the compost weekly in an effort to reduce our carbon footprint and advance a sustainability initiative shared by SMCC and Sodexo.

Maine Beaches Conference
Some 200 people attended the July 17 Maine Beaches Conference at SMCC. From seaweed to climate change to hurricanes and tourism, the conference offered an incredible amount of info about the state's valuable beach resources.
