FG unveils Pain Free Hospital Initiatives 

The Federal Ministry of Health in partnership with American Cancer Society have unveiled the Pain-Free Hospital Initiative in four pilot federal tertiary health facilities. The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Linus Awute, who launched the project in Abuja on Thursday, said the project would improve access to essential pain medicines in Nigeria.

Illegal Drugs: Lagos Task Force Seals 29 Medicine Stores 

Lagos State government yesterday sealed off at least 29 illegal patent medicine stores in the metropolis. Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr. Modele Osunkiyesi, who disclosed this to journalists, said the shops were sealed by the Taskforce on Fake, Counterfeit and Unwholesome Processed Foods.

20 Million Nigerians are Infected with Hepatitis Virus - FG  

About 20 million Nigerians are infected with the Hepatitis B and C virus in Nigeria, Community Health physician, Dr Chukwuma Anyaike has said. Dr Anyaike who is the Head Prevention, Department of Public Health at the Federal Ministry of Health stated this at a one-day stakeholders’ advocacy workshop on Viral Hepatitis awareness organised by the Yakubu Gowon Foundation in Abuja.

A Yola based Pediatrician, Dr. Sajo Njidda has disclosed that Nigerians are losing over N132 billion in treating malaria scourge annually.  Njidda made the disclosure during the 27th anniversary lecture of Nadi International School Yola.

Disease Control: LASG seeks partnership with Private Medical Practitioners

Lagos - The Lagos State Government on Sunday urged private medical practitioners to strengthen their collaboration with the State Government in the prevention of communicable diseases by conducting free public diagnosis. Dr Modele Osunkiyesi, Permanent Secretary, in the state Ministry of Health, made the call at the closing ceremony of a 2-day meeting of health personnel in Lagos.

UN calls for huge investment to roll back AIDS

New HIV infections have dropped by 35 percent from 2000 but the world needs to dramatically step up investment as well as access to treatment to roll back AIDS, UNAIDS said Tuesday. There have been remarkable strides with the advent in 1996 of antiretroviral drugs, which suppress the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), but a lot more needs to be done, the UN agency said.

Naperville Rotary improving conditions at Nigeria hospital

Imagine living in a place where the power comes on for maybe an hour a day. The main water source is 2 or 3 miles away and it's not guaranteed to be clean. AIDS and malaria are common. Hospitals don't have all the resources they need to provide care. Rotary Club of Naperville members haven't lived like that, but they're helping out in a place where people do: Nsukka, Nigeria.

Nigerian Doctors in the Americas meet in Orlando

Every year, Nigerian doctors meet all over the world in their organisations to find ways to inspire each other to engage more with Nigeria and support themselves in their various engagements. This year Chikwe Ihekweazu of Nigeria Health Watch attended the annual conference of the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA) which held in Florida, a popular holiday location in the USA.
