Washoe County utilizes "Nature's Weed Eaters"
A weed abatement project has begun at Washoe County's Anderson Park. It is a unique approach to controlling the weeds in the park by employing goats! Now through August 15th, stop by Anderson Park to check out the living "lawnmowers."

30th Annual Bowers Mansion Bluegrass Festival
Less than 10 days away, its not too late to get your ticket to the annual festival. Head on down to Washoe Valley next weekend to take in some of the best bluegrass groups in the biz, and maybe even camp out for a night or two at Davis Creek!

Valleywood Trail

Park Highlight  

Valleywood Park and Trail, is the place to go if you are looking for a leisurely stroll along a paved ADA accessible trail. The trail was built by housing developers when the adjoining subdivisions were constructed and was subsequently turned over to the City. Now there are several different paths to explore, and each will show you some great wetland habitat and wildlife. 

Science Corner

A new study has found that living trees take an average of two to four years to recover and resume normal growth rates after droughts end. Because trees remove massive amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, west coast forests are now capable of storing less carbon, which will have a greater effect on climate change.

Join TMPF to discuss the looming subject on everyone's mind--drought. We are hosting three guest speakers knowledgeable on the subject. Topics include water quality of the Truckee River, current and expected water levels, and what parks are doing to help reduce impacts during this drought. Join us at Great Basin Brewing Company in Sparks to visit with fellow TMPF members and learn a thing or two.

Goodbye to Mo and Jamie!
After a year of hard work and service, TMPF has to say goodbye to two of our most beloved AmeriCorps VISTAs, Mo and Jamie. Both have accomplished many great things over the past year, and really helped TMPF to get its feet off the ground. We will miss them a lot, but wish them luck on their future endeavours. Word on the street is that they will be making their last TMPF appearance on Monday at the Parched Parks Talk... All the better reason to come out to say goodbye!

But with sad departures, come happy arrivals. And starting next week we will be welcoming three new AmeriCorps VISTAs onto the team. Join us next week for our DYP walk at Lockwood Trailhead to say hello!

Discover Your Parks Walks

Can you believe it's already August? Neither can we, and the worst part is that means there are only four Discover Your Parks walks left this year! Join us this Thursday at Sierra Vista Park (the former Northgate Golf Course), and Reno's newest park. DYP walks are free and open to all.

Student Steward Program
The Student Stewards Program is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) and standards-based curriculum that uses citizen science to get kids excited about the natural world and their local parks. Parks become learning laboratories where students learn about their environment and collect real data for local and national research projects. The students also become stewards for the parks in the Truckee Meadows!

 

We need your help to continue the success of this important program! If you would like to volunteer with the Student Stewards Program we would love to have you. We are looking for help with in-park learning activities. If you have experience working with children or would like to gain new skills please contact our program coordinator Augustine at 775-453-0857 or augustine@tmparksfoundation.org. We look forward to hearing from you!


Reno has grown dramatically over the past 20 years, and that growth is expected to continue. The city is working on a new master plan and needs your input. Take a look at the new Reimagine Reno website and let the city know that you believe parks are an essential service. Take the short survey, and sign-up for the Conservation, Open Space, and Greenways focus group.
