Presidents Message
Greetings MDHIMA,
I hope each of you are enjoying your summer. If you did not have a chance to attend the MDHIMA & DCHIMA Annual meeting on May 8th, 2015 I want to introduce myself. I am Tasha Green, your new President for the 2015-2016 year. I hope to have a chance to meet each of you and network with you on Facebook, AHIMA Engage, or Twitter!
This summer is off to a great start and new MDHIMA board members are eager to serve, working hard and thriving! In June we hosted our fourth quarter business meeting at the beautiful Bon Secours Retreat and Conference Center. Also in June, the Board of Directors held their transitional meeting. I want to thank all the volunteers that served MDHIMA during the 2014-2015 year. The outgoing board members who graciously served the organization continue to work and share their knowledge with the new Board. It takes hard work, dedication, and commitment to serve as a volunteer. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
In July your MDHIMA Delegates attended an action packed AHIMA Leadership Symposium in Chicago and have lots of information to share. The Bylaws and Policy & Procedure Committee chairs are reviewing our current bylaws and policies and we anticipate an update sometime this year. The Public Relations chairs are working on sending a donation to the AHIMA Convention for the silent auction. The Education and Arrangements Committee has scheduled the Quarterly Business and Educational meeting for September 11, 2015 at the University of Maryland, University College in Largo, Largo Maryland. The Advocacy Committee continues to keep us posted on ICD 10 updates and wants to make sure we all continue to connect with our State Representatives. The Data Quality Committee hosted a meeting on July 21st and shared vital information about updates to groupers. Our newest e-Newsletter is released and our website continues to be updated with information to keep you informed! Like the summer temperatures your MDHIMA leaders are HOT!!! They are working for you!!
As your President I recognize this is a busy time for all! As our profession continues to transform we are focusing our efforts this year to adapt our strategic plan to the challenges and opportunities we face. We will continue to collaborate with all stakeholders and we will reexamine our mission, vision, core values, strategic goals and objectives. AHIMA wants to position the profession and members to take the lead, and MDHIMA wants to provide our members with the education and tools necessary not only to survive but to thrive in the future! It is my goal to assist our members to become effective leaders by growing MdHIMA’s vision, guiding its direction and implementing its plans. I look forward to serving as your President in the upcoming year.

Delegate Update from Leadership Symposium
 The Leadership Symposium was held July 10-11, 2015 at the InterContinental: Chicago’s Magnificent Mile. It was a great opportunity to network and engage in dialogue with other CSA Leadership, Delegates, AHIMA Board of Directors and AHIMA staff.
As House of Delegates, we are dedicated to providing all members with the valuable resources, insights, and tools to enable the transfer of knowledge to serve our members and community.
Some highlights from the two-day session included:
AHIMA’s 2014-2017 strategic plan updates were provided along with lectures on innovation, patient advocacy, as well as coding and quality initiatives though the work and research of concussion management and brain injuries.
There was an ICD-10 update and statistics on how much we, as an organization, got involved legislatively to say ‘no’ to further ICD-10 delays. Our voices were heard! Collectively, we tweeted over 84,909 times as part of our grass roots effort. Since July 2014, 32,000 letters have been sent by HIM professionals to Congress to advocate on behalf of ICD-10. Only 800 letters were sent the previous year. Our congressmen and congresswomen know who AHIMA is and our passion behind the October 1, 2015 implementation of ICD-10.
A key lecture on how to understand and advance the Information Governance strategic initiative was a focal point. AHIMA is developing its first ever IG toolkit this summer, 2015. We will be sure to share the link once it’s available.

AHIMA is involved in IG Pilots with 15-20 healthcare organizations such as RHIOs, HIEs and teaching hospitals. It is a 12 month commitment. From the pilot, we will learn a lot about how we, as healthcare professionals, can assist on the forefront in governing information.
In terms of Informatics, since the healthcare landscape is changing so rapidly, there is a need to tell the patient’s story in this changing world with health intelligence. AHIMA is involved in a Global Health Workforce Education group to better understand and offer ways we can participate in this role.

AHIMA encouraged professionals to become more involved in Data Analytics. We should be promoting the value of the CHDA credential. Data Analytics is the #2 skill needed for new CEOs in the United States.
The following breakout sessions were discussed where the top five trends that impact HIM professionals were discussed:
- Information Governance
- Informatics
- Innovation
- Leadership
- Public Good
This information was tabulated by an AHIMA representative and will be used as pulse points for key considerations in our profession.
There was an inspirational speaker who enlightened the day by making us laugh about the things that tend to stress us out.
Lastly, CSAs attended additional breakout sessions on the following topics where AHIMA leadership guided us in the discussions.
- Financial Planning
- Conflict of Interest and Fiduciary Responsibilities
- Ethics in HIM
- CSA Service Opportunities
- Mastering your role as a Delegate
- Succession Planning and Leadership Transition/Volunteer Engagement

2015 Maryland Chronic Disease Conference
The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) will be holding their 2015 Maryland Chronic Disease Conference on September 8, 2015 8am-5pm at Martins West. The conference hopes to explore the challenges and opportunities in public health approaches to prevent and control chronic disease and their risk factors. By highlighting the current and future work of our partners, the conference aims to identify best practices, examine existing barriers, and develop a roadmap for future programs in Maryland.

NIH Digital Summit
Optimizing Digital to Reach Patients, Scientists, Clinicians, and the Public

What
The National Institutes of Health is hosting a summit to explore how digital is being used by government agencies, clinicians, scientists, patients, and the public to communicate information on health and science.
Why
According to a September 2012 Pew Research Center survey, 72% of internet users say they looked online for health information within the past year. As health information becomes increasingly accessible, it’s important to take a look at how these resources are being communicated and shared with the public, how and where clinicians and scientists are discussing important health topics in the digital sphere, and the challenges health communicators face with an ever-evolving digital landscape. The summit is designed to encourage discussion and to strengthen scientific communications communities around the digital and social media strategies used in health and science agencies.

The morning will focus on digital health and the public. The afternoon will focus on how researchers and health professionals are using digital tools in their professional lives. There will be multiple opportunities throughout the day for the audience to ask questions of the various speakers.

Data Quality Report August
The Committee met on July 21 and discussed the following:
The committee is working in conjunction with the HSCRC on ICD-10 edits for data submission errors. Some of the types of edits we are working on are Ecode must never eq E849.0-EB49.9, If Nature of Admission = Delivery, then Proc in (72.x-75.99, 66.62, 68.0, 69.11, 69.51), new invalid prime diagnosis. The committee is working offline on these items and will have a call in early August to discuss and submit recommendations to the HSCRC.
A document has been distributed by the HSCRC that outlines the grouper version for October 1, 2015. SM has stated that Apr version 33 will go into effect on 10/1/2015. Version 33 will be updated with any ICD-10 changes for October 1, 2015. The HSCRC is also recommending that the PPC grouper also transition to version 33 for October 1, 2015. There is an upcoming meeting in August to discuss the PPCs this is not final. The Maryland Apr weights for version 32 will be used with version 33.
The committee is looking at training and what the membership is interested in. We are planning on a survey in conjunction with the education committee. In the meantime with ICD-10 approaching in less than 75 days if you are interested in a specific topic please send those to bwatson@thinkbrg.com. We are looking at hosting an event in August and or September on lines of a roundtable to discuss issues with ICD-10 since a number of facilities are starting to dual code in preparation for October.
The last item we discussed is the transition of certifications. If you are planning on taking any exams the ICD-9 version will be used thru September 30, 2015. Here are following dates when ICD-10 will be incorporated into certifications. 1) 10/5 CCS 2) 10/12 CCA 3) 10/16 RHIA 4) 10/19 CCS-P 5) RHIT 10/9.
The next meeting is scheduled for August 18, 2015 from 1:30-3 at the HSCRC.

Every ICD-10 Code on Twitter
@EveryICD10 has been sharing a new ICD-10 code and description on the social media platform by the minute since July 9.
A new Twitter account by revenue cycle vendor MedData is giving perhaps the best visual representation of just how vast the new ICD-10 diagnostic coding library is.
@EveryICD-10 has been sharing a new ICD-10 code and description on the social media platform by the minute since July 9, when it first tweeted, "E73.8 Other lactose intolerance #icd10."
Since then it has posted more than 14,500 codes, which at that rate could set it up to finish sharing all 68,000 of them by Oct. 1 when the new diagnostic library goes live.
Many healthcare providers have lamented the size of ICD-10's library, especially since the current ICD-9 code set has closer to 14,000 codes. But advocates say the level of specificity in ICD-10 will create more detailed patient records and help remove a lot of the guesswork when it comes to reimbursement claims.
