Called “Brilliant…utterly compelling†by the Wall Street Journal, The Martian by Andy Weir takes center stage at the meeting of the Between the Lines Book Club. The book, about the first human to land on Mars, will be released as a feature film in November. The club meets at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of each month (unless otherwise noted), in the Eldredge Reading Room on the second floor of the library. Even if you haven’t finished the book, you’re welcome to listen and participate. New members are always welcome.
Tech in an Hour: Photoshop Elements

Get a lot of tech in a little time: Join us for an hour-long class to learn more about Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 and the tools it offers. This class will give you a quick run-down of some basic tools and concepts like cropping, resizing, and adding different effects to your image, as well as some tools to manipulate and retouch your photos. Gain skills to edit your vacation photos or learn to edit your child’s senior pictures on your own! This class is especially ideal for those crunched for time or caretakers of children attending the LED Cuffs craft program for grades 6-12 that runs at the same time. Prerequisites: Strong mouse and keyboard skills required. This is an intermediate level computer class.

Learn how to use your iPad to take, edit and organize photos. This class will cover a variety of iPad apps that can be used for taking photos, creating slideshows, and editing photos, as well as the “syncing†feature to use with other devices via iCloud. Bring your iPad for the hands-on learning experience! It is recommended that participants have taken iPad for Beginners or be very familiar with navigating the device.

Grilled Cheese Demo and Tasting with Author Shane Kearns

Make room for some ooey, gooey, melty grilled cheese with Shane Kearns, author of Melt: 100 Amazing Adventures in Grilled Cheese. Learn new twists on the classic and enjoy samples of imaginative and mouthwatering grilled cheese concoctions. WKSU’s Kabir Bhatia will moderate the discussion as part of an ongoing series of interview programs with Bhatia at the library. Presently, Kearns has plans to open a Cleveland cheese shop (called locavoreCLE), featuring local Ohio cheese and other Ohio-produced products.

Join us for a screening of the documentary of, “Dear Mr. Watterson: An Exploration of Calvin & Hobbes†about the beloved comic strip and its reclusive creator Bill Watterson, who was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. “Dear Mr. Watterson" reminds viewers why the long-running strip was such a crowd pleaser and also reveals a snapshot of the current state of comic strips and newspapers. This film is not rated and is 89 minutes long. It was directed by Joel Allen Schroeder. Popcorn will be served, courtesy of the Crazy But True Gourmet Popcorn store located in Hudson.
Former Director of Gardens and Grounds at Monticello Peter J. Hatch

Peter J. Hatch, professional gardener and former Director of Gardens at Monticello, will speak about Thomas Jefferson and the history of gardening. Hatch is a nationally-known speaker and has written four books on the gardens of Monticello including his latest, A Rich Spot of Earth:Thomas Jefferson's Revolutionary Garden at Monticello. As director of the grounds at Monticello for 35 years, he was responsible for the maintenance, interpretation, and restoration of the 2,400-acre landscape from 1977 to 2012. Dr. Gina Stillitano, a hearing-loss specialist with HearUSA, will explain health factors related to hearing loss, the importance of amplification, and new discoveries within the hearing healthcare field. Through The Eyes of the Artist: Gustav Klimt

The series of artist biographical lectures continues when local art historian Felicia Zavarella Stadelman presents the artist Gustav Klimt. Klimt was a 19th century Austrian painter known for the highly decorative style of his works. The artist is perhaps best known for his works The Kiss and The Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, which is now the subject of the film Women in Gold starring Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds.
