The Institute's Mayors Training Initiative convened former mayors of some of America's most dynamic cities for a dialogue with 22 Chinese mayors and urban officials from Zhejiang province. The delegation had three weeks of sustainability training in the United States.

Launched

A partnership between the Paulson Institute and Illinois seeks to identify sectoral opportunities for Chinese foreign direct investment. The Institute will create a technology platform that China-based investors and US-based partners and assets can leverage to develop transactions that will invigorate the Illinois economy and create local jobs.

Analyzed

Cleaner air in Beijing has taken many by surprise during the first half of 2015. Anders Hove, director of China research, collaborated on a data-driven answer to those who ask: Is Beijing winning its war on pollution? The results show that the improvement in 2015 PM2.5 concentrations may result from more than just economic contraction or weather factors.

Hosted

The Mayors Training Initiative hosted an educational session with renowned Chicago architect Jeanne Gang. Urban environmental responsibility can stimulate economic vibrancy, in part by attracting the best people, Gang told the delegation of mayors and urban planning officials from Zhejiang province.

CLIMATE CHANGE & AIR QUALITY

With Beijing's skies getting bluer, China pledging climate action and the economy facing massive structural change, Managing Director Elle Carberry connects the dots between the economic and environmental side of what to expect from China's "new normal" in an interview with China Carbon Forum. The goal: sustainable economic growth.

Think Tank

As the world prepares for December UN climate talks in Paris, the latest Paulson Paper on Energy and Environment, by Joshua Busby and Sarang Shidore of the University of Texas, analyzes how international policy, particularly cooperation between the US and China, can help promote domestic efforts and actions.

CONSERVATION

In April, the Paulson Institute launched a China-South America Sustainable Soy Trade Platform, working with the Chinese government and businesses to promote legal, environmentally sustainable soy production in South America. Liu Denggao, vice president and senior agri-economist at the China Soybean Industry Association, explains why he believes Chinese buyers are ready to promote sustainable trade.

SUSTAINABLE CITIES

The Institute partnered with China’s new Green Finance Committee to host a seminar in Beijing to explore innovative financing vehicles to support China’s ambitious plans to expand environmental protection and clean up polluted industry. China will need to spend some $1 trillion a year for the next 4-6 years to meet its environmental targets, but the government can only cover about 15% of those costs.
