July 29, 2015

We may be in the middle of the summer quiet in Oakland, as many are absent for vacation, but the city is already beginning to ramp up in looking towards the Fall season and the "return" to a more regular schedule.  This week's edition includes some news about upcoming events as well as links to get involved.

That also means that we too are looking towards the Fall - which tends to be busy on College Ave.  Returning to school (with a special Sunday service this year); Out and About, Blessing of the Animals and Halloween along the Ave which starts and ends at our place...plus it's almost Thanksgiving! (wait, did I say that?)... If you're interested in helping prepare and lead our community in terms of those events please send me an email, call or catch me on Sunday!

See you Sunday in worship,

Worship This Week (Header Image)

This coming Sunday
August 2, 2015
Mark 7:1-23

Sunday's scripture is about the being holy: being fully alive, living actively in the image of God.  In Jesus's day, they talked about that in terms of clean and unclean, the exterior elements, actions or relationships that either brought us closer to God, or drove a wedge between God and us.  In this passage Jesus speaks against this, going vehemently against tradition.  He does so nonviolently, not seeking the overthrow of the Pharisees (the leaders of this clean/unclean strand in their faith tradition) but rather their redemption and move away from perfected holiness towards wholeness.

Monte will be preaching primarily from Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

Start the sermon today by wrestling with the texts via Monte's blog post online
at capcoakland.wordpress.com or
www.montemcclain.com

Our Vocabulary of Faith of class, working through the text of the day via conversation and dialogue, will be meeting this week
from 9:20-10:15am in the Library.

These updates could be incorrect if switches have been made between different people.
Be sure to update the office if you've done a switcheroo so that we can
have our publications as up to date as possible.  Thanks!

Bring canned food items to help replenish our Deacon's Food Pantry.  We distribute bags of food to the hungry each and every Sunday after worship.
Our Deacons collected food donations and financial gifts (every Sunday) - and in particular on the first Sunday of each month when we have communion.

 RECREATION VBS 2015 DAY CAMP

WE NEED YOUR ACTIVE HELP TO MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Our Recreation VBS 2015 day camp is in roughly a month: August 17-21.
We're meeting daily from 9am-3pm (as usual) and gathering again at
First Presbyterian on Broadway this year.

We can use your help during the week, whatever and whenever you can give it.
The great part about our program is that you can come and really enjoy
connecting with with the kids during the week, without having to manage administrative or programmatic details.

Our days follow this general schedule:
8:45-9:15 registration/sign-in
9-9:30 welcome songs and story
9:30-12 art classes - led by artists
12-1 lunch
1-3 free time activities (games, crafts, etc.) and local service projects.

You can help with any and all of it,
even come particular days - if that helps you.

We're going to gather on Thursday, August 13th from 6-7:30pm at First Presbyterian Church.

This will include:
30 minutes of getting to know each other and walking through the week schedule
30 minutes of dinner (we're providing!)
30 minutes of break-out training and familiarization.
Di Pagel will lead a group with adult volunteers.
Monte will lead a group with youth/young adult Counselors in Training.

Can you think a bit more about your desire to be involved and/or availability this year?  And then if you can email me back with what you might like to do and with an rsvp (if possible) for the dinner on August 13th it would be most helpful for Di and I.

Thank you! - Monte

We also have a new website for camp - which includes a lot of fun pictures and videos, along with information.  It's at

 Contemplative Prayer Group
Continues Saturday - July 25th

Ever wondered about contemplative prayer or what some call “centering prayer”?

The Women’s Group is sponsoring a series of discussions and practice on the topic.  We will meet from 8:30 am to 10:00 am and spend time discussing the practice and practicing! This series is for folks (men or women) who have no experience with contemplative prayer to those who want a refresher or a nudge or boost to hone their practice. We will read Martin Laird’s Into the Silent Land for our study and discussion.

Pete Feltman will be gone on vacation
from Friday July 17th through Friday, August 7th.

Our next Book Club gathering is Tuesday, August 4th at 12pm.

We're discussing the recent best-selling book Being Mortal which deals with end-of-life issues such as hospice care and how we accompany our loved ones facing terminal situations. The book is  very good - thought-provoking, deep - a lot of process - and I think one of the most important reads I've done in the past few years.....even if I hadn't read it while facing the very situations he writes about.

There are some resources for processing the book that I posted to our "book club" page on the church website...should you find that helpful.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT
TUESDAY, AUGUST 4th

Locations City-wide and nationally!

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live. Together, we are making that happen.

National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community and provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

Neighborhoods across the nation host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and other various community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel and exhibits.

The City of Oakland welcomes the participation of any neighborhood or community group in National Night Out, and encourages you to utilize this event as a way to bring people together and to have fun! City of Oakland elected officials, police officers, and city employees enjoy visiting National Night Out events as a way to strengthen the ties between residents and the Oakland Police Department. This year every party will receive at least one visit from  a team of city officials, police officers, or city employees, so be sure to join one!

Regular Events (Header Image)

Education :: Faith is a process not just an event

Are you looking for ways to grow in faith or to wrestle with life in community?  Faith can't be lived in a vacuum.  Like embers in a fire, it's in community - life together - that we become alive and shine.  Here are some ways you might find a place and space to grow with others:

CAPC Women's Group
1st, 2nd, 3rd Saturdays at 8:30-10:00am in the Library

The Vocabulary of Faith
aka "Bible Study"

Sunday mornings
with Pastor Monte from 9:30-10:15am in the Front Lounge. We're currently reflecting and studying together the readings for the Sunday in worship.  Look for them and study in advance on our blogs.

Reading through the Bible
Thursdays at 11:30am in the Library.
Ever read through the Bible or wanted to discover what it says?  Here's your chance.  The group always goes for lunch along the avenue afterwards.

Friday Night Meal
Friday from 6-7pm downstairs in the Light House Room
We feed roughly 100 people - homed and homeless - each Friday night.  Help is always needed from cooking to cleaning, from serving to shopping.  Contact Ellen Brylawski to select a date to serve or to get involved on a regular basis.

Godly Play
During worship each Sunday at 10:30am. We invite our children and families to worship as a full inter-generational community on our more kid-friendly 1st Sundays of the month.
