StormChasing and Cohousing

On July 22, 2015, Prairie Spruce Commons member Brenda MacLauchlan had the pleasure of joining a storm chase with Craig Hilts and Scott Elmer. This was five days before the terrible tornadoes in Manitoba. That chase would not have been "pleasurable."

Brenda learned that
the storm chase process is NOT linear.  They wanted to be ahead of the storm, and in that case, to the south-east of it. The SE position made them less likely to be caught in the storm and gave them the best chances for fabulous photos.

At Prairie Spruce Commons the process has also not been linear; this seems to be part of the cohousing process. Everyone has a part in the community so things change as the community grows.
But we are not following a storm; we are following a desire to live in Regina’s first, beautiful, environmentally friendly, sustainable, cohousing community.

Our construction will begin in March 2016. but we may have to adapt from our current 27 unit design.
The final design will be determined by the number of units purchased (with a 10% down payment) by August 20, 2015. A unit bought will be a unit built. This fall Pattison MGM Architects, in consultation with the community, will develop the design and construction documents for Prairie Spruce Commons. To read more ...

Membership Benefits

Being a member in a cohousing community allows you to book guest space in other cohousing communities. It is a great way to travel and meet people.  Prairie Spruce member Malin Hansen has this to say about their recent cohousing stay:

"We are now back from two wonderful weeks at Pacific Gardens Cohousing community in Nanaimo. What an experience! I would recommend all of you to spend some days (or weeks!) visiting a cohousing community. This was easily one of the best vacations we have had in a long time".
The housing market in Regina is very slow right now, but we’re still getting some interest because people are looking for more than just housing, they're looking for community.  And we have community: wonderful folks, engaged and fun to be with. We hope to see you at an information session or community event sometime soon.
THE COMMONS
Way Opens for Construction to Begin.........
After a long haul of working, waiting, and yes, worrying Prairie Spruce Commons is about to start construction. We now know and are ready to tell the world that construction will start in March 2016!

This breakthrough came on Summer Solstice weekend: the longest day of the year and a time of abundant growth and energy and not only in the plant world! There is a Quaker saying … "Proceed as the way opens." While we are not a Quaker community, we borrow from wisdom where we find it.  Bill Brent in his book Sacred Compass writes:  “To proceed as way opens means to wait for guidance, to avoid hasty judgment or action, to wait for future circumstances to help solve a problem.”

Cohousing is about building community and a building where we will live our lives in a beautifully designed house with private units (which include private kitchens … the most often asked question) and in the common house and garden. Way is opening for Prairie Spruce Commons to start construction… and so we are happy to send this invitation and announcement far and wide …
