July 24th marked a special milestone for the Community as Teacher program. For the 10th year in a row, UBC health care students took part in cultural camps put on by Fraser Valley Aboriginal Children and Family Services (Xyolhemylh)

"It was an opportunity to practice using our hearts and minds and to experience Aboriginal culture firsthand." says 1st year medical student Grace Chan who attended the Natural Changes for girls.

After four days of learning traditional teachings and practices, students took part in a blanketing ceremony in the Charlie Longhouse at Sts’ailes (Chehalis). Read more...

Funding awarded to study the history of patients-as-educators in Canada

UBC researcher Dr. Angela Towle has been awarded a grant from the Associated Medical Services (AMS) to study the history of patients-as-educators in Canadian medical education.

Using document analysis and key informant interviews, the study will provide an historical account of patients-as-educators in Canada since the 1960s.

A summary of lessons to be learned from the historical development of patients-as-educators in Canada and also implications for future policy and practice will be distributed to educational leaders in each medical school.
