Help keep silt out of our rivers
…and and other rivers, and the Marlborough Sounds! We’re very concerned at the potential for forest harvesting to cause run-off into rivers. Please help by making a submissions on the National Environmental Standard for Plantation Forestry (NES-PF),  due at 5pm , 11 August 2015. People can use templates supplied by MPI at http://www.mpi.govt.nz/nes-pf  or just write their own,  or support submissions from NCC , Roger May and FoM
Submissions must include:
  • your name, postal address, phone number and email if you have one;
  • the title of the proposed standard you are making the submission about;
  • whether you support or oppose the standard;
  • your views and reasons for them(with evidence if possible);
  • any changes you would like made to the standard;
  • the decision you wish the Minister to make.
Summary documents can be found on the Ministry of Primary Industries web site. If you want a copy of the FOM submission, please  email Tom Kennedy at  tnak@xtra.co.nz

The Nelson City Council submission will be on their website from 3 August and will give you more info and angles for your own submission - including that under the regime, compliance costs will fall on councils (i.e. ratepayers) rather than forestry companies.

Thanks for helping to give this important issue some balance.
Come and help to plant a wide range of natives at a community planting day this Saturday 1 August.

The planting day is part of Project Maitai/Mahitahi, which aims to improve the health of the Maitai River. The plants will create habitat for wildlife and provide a natural environment and shade for the river.
The work builds on efforts at a community planting day in June in the same location, where about 60 people turned up on the day. Council is hoping to double the volunteer effort this time around as there is a large area to be planted up. Free sausages and hash browns will help provide sustenance.
What: Maitai public planting day
When: Saturday 1 August, 10.30am – 2.30pm
Where: Just below the Maitai Camp – keep an eye out for signage
Bring: Gumboots
All ages welcome. If there is bad weather on the day, planting will be postponed until the next day on Sunday 2 August.
Come along for a fun day out with family and friends, while taking part for a great cause!

Groom Creek Planting day 19 July
Have you been to Groom Creek lately. We had another busy planting day a few weeks ago. The paddock is starting to look absolutely fantastic.
A big thank you to all the volunteers helping out. Not to forget the amazing soup, scones, hot drinks and cake that was made also by volunteers. Delicious!
