Welcome
Our annual Open Studios is the biggest event on our calendar and gets bigger every year.  Exchange Place Studios is now all but full with lots of new artists and makers for you to meet for the first time.  We have six new emerging silversmiths and ceramicists for you to meet at Persistence Works and Manor Oaks Studios respectively, all on our Starter Studio Programme. They will be running have a go workshops so you can really get to grips with some of the skills they have mastered – it makes you appreciate their work even more.

Also new this year we have our four Microgrant and Resident artists offering active and engaging ways for you to learn more about their work and the Castlegate area of Sheffield that we are proud to call our new home.  And at the Made North Gallery at Persistence Works you can enjoy some unusual ‘Artists at Work’ road signs and follow the trail down to Exchange Place Studios.

After all that you will need refreshment and this year we have some wonderful pop up catering and of course the fantastic Rhubarb Shed farm shop and café at Manor Oaks Studios, a rural idyll on the fringe of the city centre. Looking forward to seeing you in November.

Open Studios 2015 - The countdown is on!

Open Studios will be held 20th – 22nd November across our three studio sites in Sheffield.

We will once again be bustling with visitors, looking to find out more about the beautiful and unique work created here by our studio holders; over 100 of Sheffield's most talented artist and makers.

The event showcases the wealth of talent we have here at Yorkshire Artspace, and invites the public not only to see the work, but to view the fascinating spaces in which it is made, to meet the artists and to learn more about the inspiration, making processes and stories that go into each piece.

This year there will be a variety of free art and craft workshops for visitors of all ages to enjoy. There will also be catering from Tea with Percie, The Rhubard Shed and Cafe Motore.

Keep up to date with the latest events and activities on our website.

Welcome to our new Starter Studio makers.

We welcomed six new studio holders last week to our Starter Studio programmes. We have two emerging ceramicists who will be working up at Manor Oaks Studios, and four emerging silversmiths who will be based at Persistence Works.

These makers are just beginning their careers and have already impressed our selection panel with their talent and dedication. They will be taking part in our Open Studios weekend when you will be able to meet them, see the silver and ceramic ware they produce and even have a go yourself at their Christmas inspired activities.

Below are links to an 'Introducing...' blog post from each of them over on our website.

YA Microgrants - update from Helen Stratford

We recently awarded artist Helen Stratford a Yorkshire Artspace Microgrant which enabled her to find out more about the demolition work and future plans for the Castlegate area.

She got a behind the scenes tour of the site works going on at the old market building and it got her thinking about the themes of change and regeneration. We are delighted that she will be taking part in our 'Open Studios' event.

You can read her latest thoughts on the project over on our blog.

Update from our artist in residence: Paul Evans

Paul is now nearing the end of a very busy residency in Castlegate.  He has recently reflected on the project so far in his residency journal on our website. In it, he discusses the artistic community created through his Studio COCOA initiative, and some of the opportunities and outcomes created by this group.

Paul will also be contributing to our Open Studios event. He will be ‘Shining a light on Castlegate’ at an outdoor screening of artists' films projected onto the side of Exchange Place Studios on Sunday from 4.30pm - see our website for times/more details nearer the time. He will also be organising a few surprises for us, including a ‘haunting performance piece', a poetry reading and sharing the newly created Castlegate Glossary.

Gallery MADE NORTH Street Signs Project

The COCOA Street Signs project is a collaboration between COCOA (Castlegate Open Community of Artists), Patrick Murphy from Gallery Made North and The Design Museum. It has developed from the 50th Anniversary of the British Road Sign project. Three unique signs on the theme of ‘artist at work' will be created for Castlegate from sketch designs made by young people from High Storrs School during a workshop led by Castlegate Artist in Residence and COCOA lead artist Paul Evans.

This exhibition has been shown in the Made North Gallery at Persistence Works this summer during Sheffield Design Week, as part of London Design Week in September, and will appear again during Open Studios weekend. It will form a trail from Persistence Works down to Exchange Place Studios so keep a look out for some unusual looking road signs! A series of new designs by a number of illustrators, designers and artists, responding to the legacy of the signage will also be on display. Sheffield's own Pete McKee, Kid Acne and Nick Deakin all feature alongside leading British designers like Sir Peter Blake.
