Frog Auspicious start for PondNet
River in countryside
PondNet is off to an auspicious start – our vision of a national pond monitoring programme is becoming a reality. We have just completed the first amphibian survey season: volunteers have been carrying our torching and egg searching for great crested newts, looking out for frog and toad spawn and tadpoles, and collecting water samples for DNA analysis, a new great crested newt survey method.

The results are still coming in, but so far a total of 175 volunteers undertook amphibian surveys, contributing 2,016 volunteer hours to the project and returning results from 478 pond sites. This is nearly double our prediction for this stage of the project....

Newt Leading European freshwater science
Jeremy reports back from the Symposium for European Freshwater Sciences held in Geneva this July, where he led a session on small water bodies:

Over 600 people involved in freshwater science from all over Europe (and a few from other parts of the world too) got together in Geneva in early July for the 9th annual Symposium for European Freshwater Sciences....

For me the meeting was a chance to meet up with people working on freshwaters across the continent, and help the Freshwater Habitat Trust get the message out about the importance of small and large waters. There are many more people working on ponds, headwaters and small streams than 20 years ago, and we have helped make that change. And of course it was great to chat to old friends who have helped us over the years, and to start up new partnerships.

Newt Half a Million Defend Nature
Thank you to everyone who spoke up to defend European nature laws over the last couple of months. 520,325 people responded to the European Commission's consultation changes to the Birds and Habitats Directives, via the Nature Alert website. An outstanding 100,262 of those responses were from the UK - the largest from any country - with Germany a close second at 97,958.

The European Commission’s public consultation closed on Sunday and we look forward to hearing the total number of responses the Commission has received.  We already know they had the largest response of any consultation the Commission has ever run.

Thank you, again, for speaking up to #defendnature
