July 2015

I hope this monthly newsletter finds you cool and collected. While I complain in the winter, I'm thankful for my basement office when it's hot & humid. I often find myself looking longingly out my window during these summer months. A trick I use to focus on important deadline tasks is to spend a few minutes each morning to straighten and tidy my desk. Those five minutes provide hours of focus which let me enjoy part of many beautiful afternoon days outside.

Are you curious why I suggest my clients configure a mailing list even if they haven't launched their business yet or only have a handful of customers? I explore the technical reasons with Why do I need a mailing list?

On July 23rd, WordPress received a security update to 4.2.3. It addresses a cross site scripting vulnerability. If you don't think it's important to keep your software up-to-date either, please review this New research: Comparing how security experts and non-experts stay safe online.

If that wasn't enough, there will be a new release of WordPress; yesterday version 4.3 became a Release Candidate. It is targeted for an August 18th release. This new version should bring changes to the theme customizer, stronger and better passwords during account creation, and more. WooCommerce 2.4 is now also in the beta phase, if you have questions or are interested in learning more about this version, the helpful hedgehog, and how it impacts your WooCommerce site, it's as easy as hitting reply to this newsletter.

I am always coming across fascinating links of interest. Earlier today I rounded up links about font choices and how they impact what we read. I made a subtle change to the default body text of this newsletter. Is it any easier or harder for you to read? Please let me know.

Any new tech issues or questions this month? Please let me know, I'd be happy to help.

If you are overwhelmed by this monthly newsletter, there's a link at the bottom to unsubscribe. There are other ways to keep informed; the archive is accessible (there's a link at my site) and I also share the newsletter on Facebook and Twitter

keep well,

Why do I need a mailing list?

I'm always surprised when a client informs me that they don't need a mailing list to keep in contact with their customers.

Five minutes for focus

By default I don't have the tidiest workspace, it took years and foster kittens to teach me the value of putting things away.
